Baron's vs. Thunder Jet kit for 1600 Roadstar 1 Year ago
|
|
I've got my 2001 Roadstar pretty much dialed in jetting wise - except that I'm stuck with the stock needle with 5 washers under it.
Everyone keeps telling me that I need the needle from the Baron's kit to get the ultimate performance.
I found a place selling the "Thunder Jet Kit" for about the same price as the Baron's which lots of sites sell.
Does anyone have experience with the Thunder kit - specifically the needle?
Does it differ significantly from the Baron's?
Your help is greatly appreciated.
My setup:
Vance & Hines Longshots with baffles
Dyna 3000 - 34a
Iridium plugs
170 main jet
40 pilot jet
3 turns on primary circuit
3.0 fuel inlet from Grizzly 660
K&N air filter - looks like Baron's BAK.

Not trying to hijack the thread, but is that Dyna ignition worth the money? Is there a considerable performance improvement?

And what kind of mileage are you getting?
Because you are letting in more air, and due to the stock needle being fat, you upped the pilot jet to compensate, you used 5 washers to compensate, which also puts the position of the needle, (and I'll take a guess at this tho)either almost off the cruise portion of the needle and close to the start of the taper, this will get the main jet kicking in too soon as well

I was hitting the stock rev limiter often in 1st & 2nd gear so that improvement alone has been great. The 34a advance curve seems to make the bike pull stronger and yes, I think it was worth the money - got it on eBay at a sale price from the manufacturer with full warranty.

Not sure about the cruise portion of the needle, nor the mileage as I've been removing the tank to make the changes, losing the mileage info each time.
Plugs aren't looking rich, no soot in pipes, but mid-range performance isn't as strong as I think it could be.

I don't know anyone who has tried what you are attempting with a stock needle. so without any kind of data as far as dyna run, exhaust gas analyzer, it's hit and miss for ya. A carb not tuned correctly can also lose tq and hp.
