Looking for ideas 1 Year ago
I'm looking for some knowledge and ideas. How well do the carbs adjust to altitude changes? I live at 9000', work at 5500', and ride over 10,000 on a regular basis. I am pretty sure I am running rich at my home, but am wondering at what altitude I should set the carb up at, so it will run good from 5000' to 10,000'. What do you guys think?

what makes you think you are rich? what your mpg's? Is it stock?

CV carbs handle altitude changes quite well, and much better than a flatslide carb would.

Bike has Vance & Hinze Longshots, K&N Air filter, unknown if carb has been adjusted for these, but you can smell fuel in the exhaust and it is sooting the inside of the pipes pretty good.

Also no baffles in the pipes. I have only put about 20 miles on it so far, took it out yesterday, filled the tank and added the 4oz of seafoam, brought it home and cleaned and reoiled the air filter. Still has the fuel pump and AIS system. Talking to friend up here that have modified other bikes, most have said that changing exhaust and air filter actually made the bike run normal at this altitude. I am waiting for my next week day off so I can take the bike to a friend shop and do a 4 gas on it.

First thing I would is take the carb off check float level while your there take a look and see what size main and pilot jets are in there. You might want to see where the PMS is set.

I don't know about making it run normal but with the thin air at that altitude the more air the better. You do lose some ponies the higher you are. When I lived in Golden and would come to Ga. I could tell a good difference in the way my bike ran more get go @ lower elevations

You live at 9000 and work at 5500? Do you leave your house via parachute in the morning, then do a hill climb on the way home? That's pretty big difference.
