fuel air mixture 11 Months, 4 Weeks ago
|
|
Can any one tell me the best and simplest method for setting the fuel air mixture? I believe that my bike is running lean now, and would like to adjust it for optimal efficiency. And what is the best way to determine if its running rich?
I recently re-jetted the carb for straight pipes and low restriction air cleaner. After adjusting the fuel air mixture screw per Barron's instructions I think the bike is running lean.

You haven't filled out your profile yet.
In order for some one to help you, they'll
need to know what your settings and mods are.

If you followed the directions that came with the barons jet kit, then most likely you're running rich

The PMS( Pilot mixture screw), and the position of the clip on the needle, will make the biggest difference regarding the air/fuel ratio, over the broadest range of throttle positions.
As greenpus said, most of the jet kit instructions will leave you richer then needed.
Make sure the bike is warmed up good, before trying to diagnose problems
Look at the Tech Articles page, and read some of the different carb related articles regarding the PMS, and jetting etc., and that will help.
This is a good read as well.

My question sort of goes along with the OP's question, in my opinion, thereby not hijacking the post!
When riding into the mountains of CO, what would you do/how would you compensate? Would you do anything or just hope it runs well enough to get thru the week?
Mine is an 03.

If its running fine now, I wouldn't mess with it. The CV carbs handle the altitude changes pretty well.

nothing. A CV carb compensates for different air pressure

Mine is an 03.you might have to tweak the pms but the carb will compensate

The whole issue concerning fuel air mixture comes as a result of idle speed. The idle changes as I ride the bike. I can set the idle to approx. 950 rpm, and throughout stop and go riding the idle will fall to a stall rate or rise to a obvious over rev position. There seems to be no happy medium with setting the idle alone. That is the reason I asked if there was a method for determining the fuel air mixture. Every indication is the bike is running too lean. However most of the reply's have seemed to argue the setting from barons is on the rich side. So to make a definite determination in this area i was wondering if anyone knew how to determine the mixture rate in a simply method.
However, if i am missing something obvious then by all means point it out and educate me in this area.
