Very poor mpg!! Anybody have any thoughts? 11 Months, 3 Weeks ago
So, I just bought a 01 R*. After two days I took it in to get the trans recall done. 3 weeks later I get it back. I have finally gotten to spend a whole week with it now, riding everyday.

Well it seems like I am hardly getting 30 mpg. Not sure how the carb is set up. The bike has the BAK, Vance and Hines long shots, AIS is removed, front fairing, hard bags, tires and air pressure are good.

I know the manifold is showing signs of cracking, but I know it's not all the through. I am guessing I need to look into rejetting, but I don't think that it could be off that much.

So any ideas would be great.

You say it " seems like hardly getting 30" ..have u checked it, fill up to fill up? With your setup and if its jetted correctly , you should be averaging 40. Really need to know your jet setup.
Also, even if u are jetted correctly...a heavy throttle will take your mpg's right down.

No heavy throttle, have been taking it easy since it just got out of the shop, and still getting to know the bike. Just today I was riding home from work, and the fuel gauge was reading just under 3/4. When I got home it's was just barely over 1/2. It is only around 15-20 miles. The bike doesn't seem to run rich, I don't get any fuel smell at all.

So after around 50-60 miles, I have gone through half a tank.

After only 20 min on the highway, I can notice a huge diff on my fuel level. I almost thought it was just leaking out somewhere, but no leaks.

Did u fill it to see if it actually did use that much? Some of these fuel gauges were bad...ive went thru 2. I would fill it , run it about 100 miles and fill it again...see what it actually is getting. If your pipes arent "overly" sooty and you dont smell fumes, doesnt make sense.

Usually takes a few miles before the fuel gauge settles and gives you an accurate reading (even then I wouldn't totally trust it). Maybe you read the gauge before it settled on a good reading. Only getting 15-20 miles on a 1/4 tank seems really off. You need to run a few tanks down while tracking number of miles between each fillup to get a good average.

I just made a run on the highway with fairing and loaded bags and I averaged 42 mpg (and I was hitting the throttle pretty good).

Get some more info and let us know. Good luck!

The only time my gauge is accurate is a a half a tank, and its new. The only way to get true mileage is to keep a log of fuel and miles. How fast do you ride? Anything over 75 and mine sucks gas. Since the bike is new to you have you cleaned the fuel system? I like Seafoam and Chemtool the best. I remember a while back some people were trimming the shoulder on the back of the enricher knob and helped a little.

Agreed on the guage check. Always measure your mpg by calculating mileage versus how many gallons you actually filled. I reset my trip odometer at every fill up and go by that.

Even after 5 years I still get fooled. This morning the gauge was reading bone empty, had been 150 miles since last fill up, so I stopped...and it only took 3.1 gallons.
