help with mikuni..... 1 Year ago
Ok so I recently removed my hypercharger for a stocker with K&N. The hypercharger stuck out a bit far for my leg comfort and I tend to get caught in the rain….

Anyhow I’ve also found that the previous owner changed out the carb to the mikuni 42. The bike seems to have a lot more midrange power now… that could just be in my head….however,I was getting a lot of popping on decal prior to the air cleaner swap… and I’m still getting some now. I have the air mixture screw backed out 2.25 times currently and I’m going to do some riding tonight to check it out. I felt some of the popping was due to leanness (on decal I could crack the throttle a hair and stop popping but still slow down)….. Rinehart pipes, mikuni 42, and k&N… any recommendations are appreciated.

Admittedly I have no idea what jets are in there or what clip the needle is on. Whats the best way to go about checking this stuff out?

Thanks,
Mike

Decel poping is a lean issue, ais, or air leak in the pipes. The hsr42 mix screw lets more air in as you screw out so I would turn it in some to see if it stops or at least gets better. Only way to find oit what jets are in there or what the needle is at is to open up the carb and have a look see inside.

Your elevation where you live is 266 ft above sea level. Is your bike a 1600 or 1700, does the carb have the TPS mod done on it, is the manifold ported is the AIS removed? We really need to know what your carb has in it, needle, main, pilot.

I am going to be watching this thread like a hawk.

I hate my hypercharger as well, only becuase of how far it pushes my leg away from the tank. It even makes my right hip cramp from holding my leg in.

And I am in the same boat, with no clue as to what has, hasn't been done with the carb. (Except I don't have decel popping), the rest of this thread and answers will be awesome though.

one thing to do is to double check if you have any leaks in the exaust or the mani simple to do might save some trouble then if you wana try tuning the pms on the 42 use the tuning process in the tech section just like curt said though you will need to turn it the opposite way if the tech says turn out a half you turn in a half on your carb that will be a quick try thing then if all else fails seek out curt if you can pin him down to help you with possible jet change he seems to have it fully grasped as he said check for the tps mod im unsure if that will have anything to do with the popping but if we need to take further steps then will need to know if its on there.

keep in mind, the pilot screw gets leaner the more you back out. It works the opposite of the stock carb, on the 42 it controls air while the fuel is a constant determined by the pilot jet size. I would turn it in to 2 to 1.75 turns out from a light seat.

not sure about TPS Manifold or AIS

i tightened the exhaust but maybe i'll loosen and then tighten to make sure they are seated correctly. also this problem only started after the first time i played with the hypercharger... there is a good chance shifted somethign and could have a air leak in the manifold.. i'll spray that down tonight and see what happens

i was under the impression that backing the screw out made it richer! thanks for the info that makes more sense why the bike acted the way it did when i turned it in.

ok so after a few hundered miles this weekend i think i may have it sorted out... enough for now anyway. I seated the air fuel mixture screw and backed it out 1.5 turns. and that was it! pretty crazy. i get some light popping on hard decel oncen in a while but not all the time. i like the torque/midrange the stock cleaner and K&N give over the top end of the Hypercharger. (my flaps were stuck wide open anyhow)
I may try tweakin that screw one way or the other but overall i'm happy!
...rear suspension may be next... seems tired (39k).. maybe i should do the flip and upgrade the spring...hmmmmmm

On that rear suspension, If it seems a bit tired, the lock nut on the shock may have backed off. It't happened to several folks.............

when i got the bike that nut was as low as it could get... i was draggin exhaust and such.... i raised it way up ...and have since found a middle ground... but seems still to be real bouncy when riding two up. cadillac like....but bouncing round turns isn't so fun
