Jetting want go lean (confussed) 2 Years, 9 Months ago
I have an 06 R* with stage 3 stock pipes, K&N filter, National Cycle 2up wind shield. AIS is removed and the fuel pump has been relocated under the gas tank.

Before rejet the bike would not hardly run with the modified exhaust and K&N filter installed. I installed a Dynojet kit set up per the instructions: DJ 200 main and clip on the 4th slot from the top (flat end).

With the DJ kit installed per instructions, the bike performed good but I noticed that I was only getting 35 miles per gallon and in only a few hundred miles I checked the plugs and found that they were fouling at a rapid rate.

After trying various PMS settings ( Which appeared to make no differance at all) I began to adjust the clip position on the needle. After I moved the needle to the 2nd from flat end I noticed a difference in drivability: the motor appeared to hesitate until throttle above 1/4 ( only minor). Also the motor would began to get real sluggish if at 50 mph steady speed into a very strong head wind. Motor was not sluggish if driven at same speed but down wind. I tried adjusting the PMS to correct for this lean condition with no noticeable difference to the symptoms. I removed the washer from the bottom of the plastic spacer and put in on the top of the spacer. I believe this is the equivalent of 2.5 on the needle.
This setting of 2.5 corrected the lean condition.

Next I thought I would ensure I am using the correct Main Jet. With DJ 200 installed I completed the WOT in 4th gear accelerating to 80 or 90 mph and backing of throttle 1/8 of throttle. The bike continued to accelerate at same speed as with throttle WO.

I continued performing the WOT test as I changed the MJ incrementally until I was using DynoJet 165. With the 165 installed I think maybe the engine was trying to tell me that it is lean.

Also, With DJ 170 main jet and needle at 3, I completed a 100 mile ride in the country side and was getting 45 mile per gallon. Maybe the MPG would be around 52 as it was before the mods if I could keep my wrist from flexing!

I am confused, from what I have read my bike should be running poorly due to lean condition but yet it is not. In a nut shell (1)adjusting the PMS screw makes no noticeable difference with various needle settings. (2) The bike does not indicate a lean condition during the WOT with Dyno Jet 165 Main Jet installed. Am I doing something wrong or should I not worry about it as long as the bike runs good and is getting the proper MPG?

IMHO: I'm not real savvy with dynojet jet kits, I've got a baron's and from what I understand the needles are different... I do know what the roadstar feels like when she is to lean, I put on the speedstar K&N filter/box with the stock jet set up.. feels like it's running out of gas, as a matter of fact she'd barely run... I then set up an air flow restrictor (home made) until I got the jet kit, and as it was still to lean, it would idle and do fine on the side roads but on the highway under hard throttle it would surg and sputter as if I need to switch to reserve... once I jetted it, no problems... and from what I have seen with other peoples roadstars they will barely run lean, but will run SUPER rich with only long term problems... so if you're just a touch lean and you don't have any problems cranking on the throttle / open highway... keep her there... your gas mileage sounds right on... as far as the PMS, it will generally only adjust the mix for idle and up to 1/4 throttle though in theory the pms constantly bleeds into the system... so adjust it for idle and then set the proper main jet / needle setting for 1/4 to wot.. most people will go in on the pms until it sputters at idle and then back it out a just enough to smooth out the idle (make sure your idle is set correctly prior to changing) AND make sure you put the air cleaner back on to test it, it's a real pain in the butt, but adjusting it with the air cleaner off will change you mix as soon as you put it on ~Guido

It's sounds like the 170 is probably where you want to be. Try the needle on the 4th clip.
