Hard staring strong smell of gas!!! 12 Months ago
i have an 03 1600...just had the recall done and had no problems prior to that. now after a long ride on a hot day. sometimes, but not all the time, it does not want to start right back up...when it does this i get a strong smell of gas back through the breather. but once it's running it seems fine...i do get a backfire sometimes when i blip the throttle. Any suggestions? it has an aftermarket breather and V&H Pipes.

Sounds like boil over...its draining your bowl, causing it to take longer to start.
Have you been riding in "hotter" than normal temps lately?

Does sound like a boil, but if you let the fuel pump do it's thing when you turn on the key, shouldn't it counter the hard start issue, since it will fill the bowl back up?

Used to happen to me alot. Shut the fuel down about 20 or 30 seconds before you turn the motoer off. Then start it just before you open the fuel again. Seems to have stopped the problem for me

I turn mine off prior to shutdown too but I never had any issues, just something I do

This is the easy fix, there are a few on here that have done a heat shield with the thermal tape over the entire fuel system from the tank to the carb.

+1 wrap the fuel line. Running it between the jugs keeps it hot.
