poping during decell 11 Months ago
Hi, need some help to figure out what is going on, i took the carb out and clean it, looks OK but need to change some orings since don't look very good, hopefully no more gas leak...

But i also changed the filter with a K&N, since original was soaked with oil??

After that the bike started popping when deceleration. I know i have the AIS still on, but it wasn't doing it before i took the carb and added the filter.

I have aftermarket exhaust, they have no brand and a baffle is welded since it has the end with a curve. They are not hugger.

When i set the carb mixture i turn it 2 and a half turns, but since i put the filter on; is that the right amount for the mixture screw????

It was the first time i took a carb so i don't know anything about this, just learning and this forum has been very helpful with other problems i had. I appreciate your help...

Sounds like it has a lean issue now. Check for any vacuum leaks. Check your intake for cracks, or the carb not sealing up to it properly. Double check everything you took off, and make sure you don't have any vacuum leaks.

And welcome to the clinic.

I will check for leaks, there should be between carb and air filter or carb engine?

The pops are very soft.

Also the filter is the one that goes inside the standard filter assy.

Is the two and a half turns in the carb OK? or should i rejet?

Is it possible that the lean is due to the filter + exhaust?

Sorry to many questions....

Since u put the k&n filter on it will run leaner now..........if everthing is tight........ first try to turn your mixture screw out another 1/4 turn. See if that helps.
You may have to step up the main jet, but try that first.
What are your jet settings now?

Plug or remove your AIS and get the bike nice and warm turn the PMS in till it starts to stumble and idle badly. Then turn it out slowly until the idle smooths out. Ride for a while and see how it does if needed turn it out 1/8 of a turn at a time until you find the sweet spot. You have a more free flowing air filter now so it is running leaner and the AIS only make it worse.

Re:poping during decell 10 Months ago
Hi, i received the Yamaha speed jet kit, it came with 4 main jets, 160 165 170 & 175. The main needle with clip adjustment and 2 stainless washers plus one bigger plastic one. Also the two pilots that came are 50 & 60.

I have a open exhaust with baffles incorporated (due to a bend at the end is not possible to take them out or add anything). They are not hugger.

Also i use a new K&N filter that goes inside the stock air filter unit.

Right now my setup is

165 main
35 pilot
2.5 PMS.
Normal height is 1050 meters above see level.

Is not running bad; but when is running without throttle applied, as soon as i hit the gas, it looses power for a mil-sec and start pulling fine. i have pulled 100 mph at level fine.

What i feel is that is not working good in the middle throttle, the spark plugs are clean, no black showing in both front and rear. Here regular gas is red, so they show a reddish color. Before i took the carb out they were black and the spark tip barely clean. Seem to be much better now, i think is lean due to the cough when i pull the gas and is at idle.

I would like to use the main needle, but don't know what could be the right clip position due to my setup. Can i use the 170 main jet too?

What about the pilots is 50 too big for my setup?

I know, the bike is not that bad right now, but I want to use the new kit. Also received some parts for rebuilding the carb due to needle don't stops gas form flowing, so if i don't turn the tank valve off, the back cylinder will fill with gas and have a hard time starting.

When i start the bike it needs chuck for more than 2 minutes to stand idle.

Bike has improved a little about mileage but is doing 32 to 33 in heavy traffic. (normal here)

This weekend i will go for a 200 km ride (to the beach side and need to have the bike ready. It will help me to figure out the best mileage with my new setup.

Thanks for the advises!!!

Go with the 170 main jet, leave the 35 pilot in it and move your needle clip to the 4th slot from the top (Blunt end. After you have ridden it a few days you should be able to run your finger inside the pipe and have just a small amount of soot on the top of your finger prints. The inside of the pipes should be black but not brown and you should have a huge smudge of soot on your finger the the top of your finger prints. Do the AIS removal first and see what it does with the 165 in it.
