Yet another jetting Q 2 Years, 9 Months ago
O.K. here's what I've done. Got an 05 R* removed the AIS, put on V&H Shortshots and removed the fuel pump. Replaced the needle valve assembly with the 2.5 mm one as per the instructions here. Have pms set at 3 1/2 turns out. Other then that the carb is still stock. I do have the Barons jet kit but haven't installed any of it yet. Put it all back together today and when I twist the throttle it will backfire thru the carb. If I hold the throttle open about a 1/4 turn it will backfire thru the exhaust and even spit a little flame out. I know it is rich. Now how to fix it . This is with the air cleaner off, haven't tried it with air cleaner on.
Forgot to mention I didn't mess with the float setting I left it where it was from the factory.

Post edited by: Thom M, at: 2006/03/23 14:20

Ok I've put in the Barons needle set on 4th slot with stock spacer and washers set up. The 172.5 main and turned the pms in to 3 turns out. Also turned duration screw in to the nut. Runs much better am just getting some breaking up at WOT like it is starved for fuel. Any thoughts?

Sounds like you started off on the right foot but it still sounds too lean.

Try moving the needle to the 5 th clip and do the WOT test again.

Might be a good idea to check the float level as you did change out the needle valve assembly. If this is off then it will be difficult to dial the carb in.

Thanks Doc,
I'll pick up the tubing to check the float level tomorrow. I was just thinking about the 5th slot myself but I wanted to hear from someone who really knew before I went any further. I was able to take it out for a test ride twice today after I put in the new needle and jet and other then the wide open problem the only other problem was when I got to the end of my road in either direction (about 200 yards both ways) the bike stalled and I had to wait about 30 seconds before it would start. That is making me think the float may be off a little. Well thanks again Doc

Checked the float level today and it was right on. Took it out for a long ride and it ran great. Going to wait till the weather is warmer before I try anything else. Really just need to check milage now. AS a word of warning to others. Be sure you have plenty of gas in your tank. My gas guage was showing 1/4 tank and it was not running all that great. Filled it up yesterday and it ran great today and from when I put the gas in yesterday. I don't think my gauge was reading right from being connected and dis-connected so much. Was at that stage where I was getting gas from it sloshing into the petcock, but not enough to keep the bowl full.

Re:Yet another jetting Q 2 Years, 8 Months ago
Let me ask you this.
If on the 1600 R* the main was I believe a 168.5 why did Yamaha go to a 182.5
for only 100 cc or 4 cu. in. increase in motor size? Before I rejetted I would get either a back fire or a desieling effect when I would shut the bike down. Now I get neither. Don't know for sure that was caused by the jet size, probably a combination of things, but I know my * is running stronger and better now and I still haven't got it entirely dialed in.
