jetting 4 Years, 6 Months ago
Hey guys I'm new so bear with me. Will have to get my 10 yr old to help me with my sig pic. 04 R*. ais scrapped. V & H longshots W/ thunder monster baffles. Thunder manufacturing k&n open air kit. 175 main. pilot stock. I'm at sea level. Was getting 32 mpg. not much hwy riding. did not need to choke. Adj pms to 1 and flipped nut on acc pump. Had to choke, idled better, ran great w/ occasional carb cough blipping throttle or slowly taking off when cold. Still bad mpg. I finally grew a pair and decided to get into carb because of Doc and Gram. Hopefully you guys will help me. Just ported manifold. Ordered float needle valve and scrapping fuel pump. Getting barons pms adj needle and jet kit. Do you route the choke, heater wires, tps wires over the manifold or under? I think I'm gonna use Doc's choke mount technique. Do I need to vent gas cap? Any suggestions on the jetting would be greatly appreciated. I would love to get close the first time. I have used this website for everything on my bike thanks to everyone. I will try to return the favor with my 2 cents.

Welcome to the site, I'm new myself working on my first week, lots of info to take in. Can't wait to see your ride. Sounds like you know alittle more about the carb than I do, wish I could be of help.
Quick question, does scrapping the AIS system void warranty? I would really like snatch all that crap of my ride, but mine's only 2 months old and I bought extended warranty also, hate to void it!

Sorry, don't know about warranty. bought mine used. AIS removal made a huge difference in appearance to me but other people who don't have a R* don't know it's gone. Your bike looks great. I had apes on a 2000 indian scout. it was a hard decision to go to drag bars. I don't really know much about carbs, but I've been using this site almost 10 mths b4 i finally joined. better late than never.

Guys Ais removel cleans up the front and gets rid of the fluffing sound. You can plug the vac.lines without removing it and disable
the system. Your way ahead of me starstruck,I'll defer to those that know more about those mods.
Didn't remove my AIS till the year warranty ran out.

me too.

Using Mikuni jets, I'd start with ...

170 main
stock pilot
needle clip on 5 from the top (washer, clip, white spacer, silver washer0
PMS at 2.5 - 3 turns out

Do the WOT test to check if the main is OK. After you have the main nailed, then raise the clip to the 4 the slot and test drive for a bit.

Do you route the choke, heater wires, tps wires over the manifold or under?

Doesn't matter.

Do I need to vent gas cap?

No. The tank vent does a good job as long as it's not plugged.

hello doc, 1st time to post on site. have owned my 2007 road star since august and now have 1800+ miles on the bike. was letting it run rich through the break-in period and now feel it's time to get rid of the soot and lean it out.
set up at the dealer new:

cobra 3" chrome over drag pipes
dynojet kit
canister removed
stock airbox

getting 31-33 mpg on the hwy, and ave 26 in town. inner aspect of pipes are thick black with soot as well as the frame rail and a little on the side fo the fender behind the pipes.
from the remaining parts in the jet kit... looks like i've got the 175 main installed and won't know what clip slot the needle is set until i have the carb apart.

bike runs well overall but seems underpowered from where i feel it should be. and the milage....
plugs after wot are black soot coated.
have 165 and 170 main in the kit without buying more.

requesting your advice for the main jet size and the needle position you would recomend with this set up to safely lean out a bit.

thank's, mark

Jomasc!

I'm sure Doc, Musky and BB will jump in here but, I would start with your airbox either change it or do a poormans BAK by drilling holes in the front and switching to a K&N.
175main is pretty rich I would try the 170 (I'm running 167.2)check your needle position, clip should be about 5th from the top. leave the pilot alone. and turn your PMS 2 1/2 turns out.
I ride really hard and get 35-40mpg I don't really believe these guys who get 45+mpg
Good Luck

The 175 Dyno main is plenty lean. You might want to condider going to the 180. I'm guessing they went up in size on the pilot jet. Dealers love to do that. And a rich pilot will kill your mpg. With just pipes there isn't any need to jet at all. At most you might have needed to tweak the PMS but probably not. We need to know what pilot jet. What slot the clip on the needle is in. And what your PMS setting is. Then we can go from there.
