I have this setup on my XV16:
Speedstar high flow manifold
108cu 10.5:1 pistons
open exhaust
hypercharger Pro R
Stock carb

Where should I start with jeting?
Pilot jet?
Main Jet?
Needle?

Using the stock carb with a big bore, high compression, open intake and exhaust, R* engine is like trying to mate an Arabian stallian with a mule. It can be done, but why bother? The mule can't keep up, the stallion will get frustrated, and the outcome will be ugly, at best.

What I mean is, the stock CV (constant velocity) carb doesn't flow well enough for the stock engine (in my opinion). It was designed for snowmobiles, as I understand, not specifically for an application like the R*.

I'm sorry I won't be more specific help, but I feel it would be no end of trouble for you to try and get enough gas/air into your engine for it to run like it could, with that stock carb. I'm sure someone out there will disagree with me. More power to them.

I love my Mikuni HSR-42. I kick myself for not getting rid of the stock carb earlier. I fought my stocker for about 2 years. Dialed the HSR42 right in without any trouble at all.

Hope this helps. Sorry, man. I really don't often tell people that I think they're making a mistake.

I think beefcaketoplay is running the stock carb with the 108. Not positive though. Try a search for his name and see if anything with setting comes up.

I hear mixed reviews of the HSR45. It looks like the very came carb, but with a larger intake opening to me. But SOME in the know say to stay away from it. Never heard anything negative about the HSR42.

Since you're expressing some interest in switching carbs, I see that some carb gurus are playing (successfully) with the Edlebrock carb. You can go to the Delphi Road Star Project forum (from the Delphi Watch link on our front page), then search on Edlebrock or carb or Odo from there.
