Talked to Yami mechanic today 1 Year, 1 Month ago
The mechanic at my dealership actually came out and gave free advise today while i was there getting new DJ180 main. He asked me what I was going to do with it and why. I told him I was adding a new BAK(speedstar not Barons) and that I figured I needed to jet a bit bigger. Here was his advice.
He said with the dynojet kit I should start with the 190 not 180(too small) and deffinetly not the 200(too big). So I told him that the guys here figure 180 should be the starting point to which he said maybe but 190 would likely be the one.
His reasoning was this- because of the nature of the 1700's imbalance of fuel flow between the rear and front jug you risk running the front real lean and and causing damage over time not right away. If I ran the 200 it would over feed the rear and cause SVS in a very short time unless I beat the bike hard for long distances. He felt 190 was a comprimise between the two. As a matter of fact he actually tried to talk me out of any mods Yamaha or otherwise because of the SVS issue with 1700cc. He has been in the game for 24 years and never seen SVS on an unmodified bike yet "maybe just lucky". He even admits he has seen it come up on bikes he has modified since 2004.
He even mentioned that Yamaha has be "useless" with a solution but does not believe that oil levels are the culprit he blames it on the single carb, fuel flow, jetting and weak valve springs.

I know this is rambling a bit but i would like some feed back from you guys. I thought it was great for him to give me that info for free knowing he would not get the work out of it.
By the way I never did get the jet I guess we need to know the first 2 letters of the jet type. like Dj180 of bj180 something like that

You have to go with what you feel comfortable with. I don't think the 180 will hurt the motor in any way. Do your front plugs look lean with the 175? It is refreshing to hear of a mechanic that isn't spewing the Yami retoric.
