You can run the 172.5 and move the clip on the needle to 3rd slot with white spacer and 2 silver wahers. That is what I was running with my OEM carb here in the Dallas area and I could get up to 52 mpg at 65-7- mph. Around town I would get around 36-38 but I twisted it in town. But do check for leaks at the manifold and pipes first the PMS good spot is around 2-2.5 out.

I am running regular unleaded. I was running about 2 3/4 out until yesterday and I did the adjust the PMS in until rough idle then back it out and it seemed to run best at about 3 1/8. I was getting some decel pop when I would decel from high speeds(80 plus). That's why I wanted to turn it out a little. Felt like I was lean.

I think I'd check real good for a leak that may be starting at the manifold and head joint. Check the tightness on your exhaust manifold bolts also. If their loose, it can cause some popping.

Although 85 will suck the fuel big time, now that your back to the usual routine, your fuel mileage should resemble what it was before.

Did you set the idle up to about 900rpms with the motor warmed up good before you did your tweaking on the PMS?
I will get some starting fluid today to see if I have leaks. My bike was definitely warm but I'm not sure about the rpms as I don't have a tack. I just set the idle until I get a good giddy up lope. Something else I forgot to mention was I have been having to adjust the idle a lot at stop signs when I come off the highway. It always seems to be idling high after being under load.

How do I check to see if my pipes are leaking? Do I spray soapy water on the flanges at cold start?

At 900rpms, the lope is gone, its about as smooth as a V-twin Roadie can idle. It will sound kinda fast. At 700rpms, you just start the lope. Constantly screwing with the idle probably is a sign its to low. I set mine at 700rpms, and leave it alone.
You can check for leaks around the exhaust, by using a lit cig if you smoke, or an incense stick(that Zen dude Curt, started that). The burning tip will flare with any leak as the air blows by...like blowing on charcoal.

Re:POOR MPG 10 Months, 2 Weeks ago
OK I've run two tanks of gas through her since my adjustments and I'm getting a shade under 44 MPG on both tanks. I still smelled rich, whichever has been a problem since I bought the roadie, so I did the choke knob trim. That eliminated the.rich smell on the way in today so I'm excited to see if that will also improve my mileage. Thanks for everyone's help.

44 is great for commuting mileage. On a steady run at a reasonable speed for good mileage(south of 75 ) it should be really good.

You can tweak the duration screw on the accelerator pump now too. I'm about 2 1/2 turns off the lock nut, with the nut on top of the arm. It'll take some of the response out when leaving a stop, but you can find a happy medium between the stock, and where its to sluggish.
There's a Tech Article about it.

When i bought my R it was getting 37mpg and had a huge piece of plexi for a shield. Had the shield off once and ran 200 miles up to OKC from Dallas at sustained speeds of 80+ and got 47. Then I added the batwing and dropped to 43. I can live with that.
