Re:BAD FUEL MILEAGE 1 Year ago
THE FINAL RESULT

My substantially more mechanically inclined friend and I took it all apart and installed the Maxxair Mixture screw. We found the main jet was a 175 and the Baron needle was on the fifth position. We installed the 167.5 jet and put the needle on the third position. In addition we ported the manifold. Also the accelerator pump was turned all the way off and the mix was about 3 1/4 turns out.

Now the bike starts right up and really runs sweet! The initial milage estimate is 34 MPG. This is a slight improvement but what I really like the way that the bike starts up easily now with the charcoal canister removed.

One issue I have is the choke now will not stay out like it used to. Is there a special trick to that deal?

Also, I one other small issue is that there is a vent on the top of one of the corners of the cylinder heads, this has a tube that enters the air cleaner (BAK). Often times oil get's puked out into the air cleaner, which causes it to get plugged up a bit and discharge oil out onto the pipes.

I really appreciate the help from y'all and a big shout out to the Fauxrider who did the technical work.

THANKS!!!

Right behind the choke knob is a round rubber grommet. Tighten that up just like you would a nut. (Just use your hand, not a wrench or pliers)The tighter you get it the harder it will be to push the choke in so find a happy medium.

Also, I one other small issue is that there is a vent on the top of one of the corners of the cylinder heads, this has a tube that enters the air cleaner (BAK). Often times oil gets puked out into the air cleaner, which causes it to get plugged up a bit and discharge oil out onto the pipes.

First make sure it isn't filter oil from the K&N filter that is getting on your pipes. I had that trouble with mine. You can take that hose and run it out the bottom of your bike instead of hooking it up to the BAK. You will need to plug the hole in the BAK where it hooked up to if you do that. If you really are getting a lot of oil out of that tube your oil level might be too high.

The initial mileage estimate is 34 MPG
What size is your pilot jet? Stock is a 35 Mikuni and that's really all you need. Anything bigger will kill your mpg and not really do anything for the running of the bike.

Re:BAD FUEL MILEAGE 1 Year ago
the pilot jet appears to be stock.

I need to re-test the milage. I might be off...

Re:BAD FUEL MILEAGE 1 Year ago
I find that if I abuse the power of the Roadie, it gets just over half it's full fuel econmomy potential. If I am on a trip and I don't do any jackrabbit starts or WOT stuff, it can pull off over 58 MPG (Imperial). Got up to 68 MPG (Imperial) on one trip last summer, but kept the speed below 62 MPH the whole trip, and used the cruise as much as possible. (My riding buddy drives like a little old lady on those trips!)
The Rumbling around through the city mileage is pretty lousy, as one would expect. (Enjoying the stoplight take-offs! )
