Barons Needle specifics 4 Years, 3 Months ago
I looked around at other posts, and although I'm sure the information I seek is probably here somewhere, I'll ask anyway. I installed the Barons BAK with the supplied jet and needle. Per other posts I have read, I went with the 170 in the BAK (Mikuni..right?)Kept the stock pilot (although I forgot to verify that it is the "stock" 35) Clip in the 4th (from blunt end)groove, plastic spacer under clip, no washers (per tech article posted her in the clinic) PMS 3 1/2 turns out. Started it, and it was back firing through the carb which I assumed was a lean condition, turned PMS about another 1/4 turn no more back firing. Took it for a ride and it's a little gurgelly (is that a word) at low throttle, but runs good at higher throttle (cranked her up to about 90-95 and no drop off of power), so right now, my only complaint is at lower throttle. Musky has reponded to an earlier post that I should put the washer back under the spacer as it was stock. (should the tech article be updated?)Since then, I see that he has recommended that others put 2 washers under the spacer. Would this apply to those of us running the barons needle as well? I thought I read somewhere that adding a washer under the spacer was equivalent to 1/2 a groove. If that is the case adding 2 would be the same as just moving the clip a groove wouldn't it? Is there some other reason to having 2 washers under the plastic spacer? I am not doubting Musky in any way and greatly appreciate his, and everyone else's help. I am just trying to understand it all. By the way I have not done the WOT test yet, and have read that the clip shoud be on the 5th groove. Does that hold true if I have 1 or 2 washers under the spacer? I apologize for being so dense about this. Oh by the way, I am running pipes also (V & H Pro Pipe).

Use 2 washers if you are on the third clip, just one if on the 4th clip, This is with the barons needle.

I have run both ways and mine runs better on the 3rd clip with 2 washers and the 167.5 main jet. PMS 2 turns out.

To do the WOT test put the clip on five with the spacer and one silver washer under the spacer.

Once you have verified the main, move the clip to 4 and test. If it runs bad in the midrange then add another silver washer (2 under the spacer). If it runs good try moving the clip to 3 with 2 silver washers under the spacer.

Make sure the idle is to spec and the bike warmed up.

One washer under the spacer is the default setting regardless of what groove the clip is in. The stock setup is washer, clip, spacer, washer. If you are in the 3rd groove and you add an extra washer it moves you to 3 1/2. Do you absolutely have to use a washer under the spacer? Nope. But it will just confuse the issue if and when you ask for help. It doesn't matter which needle you are using as far as the washers. The reason for having 2 washers under the spacer is to move the needle up 1/2 groove. I would recommend doing the WOT with the stock washer / spacer set up. You want to get the main dialed in before you start on the needle and PMS.

There's an order and a system to tuning the carb. The reason you see these things repeated over and over again is because this is what people have found to work the easiest and best. With that said don't take anything as gospel. At best any settings you are given is just a starting point. Every bike is different and you need to tweak until your bike is happy.

Musky, you mention an order to tune the carb. I've been through the tech articles and not seen it (but I've been known to miss things) . There are so many variables (accel screw, PMS, WOT throttle test, needle clip etc.) Is there a simple order that should be followed when tuning?

First make triple sure you have no air leaks. Put the clip in the 5th groove and do the WOT to get the main right. This might include trying more than one main. Once the main is good drop the clip to the 4th groove and work on tweaking the needle and PMS. Change only one thing at a time.

So you rejet if it rains? If the temp falls some? If it's humid? If you go up a hill? You must be very busy!!
