Needle Comparison 2 Years, 7 Months ago
I recently put on the Speedstar K&N filter and used the Speedstar jet kit. My dealer set it up using an exhaust gas analyzer and the bike ran great. I decided shortly after to switch to the Baron's BAK, disappointed in the finish on the Speedstar one. Of course the BAK comes with Baron's jet kit. All I did was bolt on the new air filter and did not make any changes on the carb. It seems to be running just fine, as a matter of fact, even better! I seem to be getting a little better throttle response in the mids. Maybe the Power Cone has an effect?

Anyway, my question is that I understand the needles are different in the Speedstar kit from the Baron's kit. My dealer recommended the Speedstar needle, of course. Baron's recommended that I switch to theirs, surprise! Is there much difference in the two and is there any value in going to the trouble of replacing the Speedstar needle with the Baron's one?

I'm surprised that you would notice a difference between the two air boxes.

I believe the Baron's needle has a thinner profile. My understanding, and it may just be heresay, it that is a bit better.

Swaping needles is a 10 min job so .... you could always swap the needles and tell us first-hand if the performance is different.

I was definately surprised there was a difference! Since they are both high flow filters I didn't expect anything but I don't think I'm imagining it. The only thing I can attribute it to is possibly the power cone in the BAK. I'll let you know if I swap out the needles but I do hate to mess with what appears to be a good thing! I always kinda figure, if it ain't broke don't fix it, but I also have a hard time leaving things alone if I think there's an advantage to making a change!

If the only thing you swap out is the needle then you can always swap it back if you don't like it. Have I convinced you yet

As for the power cones. Others have tried them and have not reported in benefits.

Doc,

I'm not much of a wrench. I had my dealer do the carb work using an exhaust gas analyzer. I do all the bolt on chrome stuff, pretty simple, but I haven't done anything on the carb. I hate to go back to the dealer as I'm sure he'll charge me plenty to switch it and then again to switch it back if needed, so I was hoping that someone has already done this and could let me know if it makes any real difference. I'll definately let you know if I do it. Thanks for the advice.

If he used an exhaust gas analyzer and it's running well, then ....

'leave well enough alone'.
