HelpHe with Jetting 2 Years, 7 Months ago
|
|
I just purchased a used '00 roadstar with about 10k miles on it. It has Cobra longshot pipes and a Kuryakyan twin velocity air cleaner. I have been getting about 20 miles per gallon. I do not know who the manufacturer of the jet needle is but it has about 7 positions for the clip. The clip is currently on the 4th position from the bottom of the needle. The jet setup for the main is 165 and the pilot has the number 35 on it and the starter jet has the number 575 on it. It still has the AIS on it for now. Any help would be grately appreciated. Vince

Welcome to the Clinic snakeoid,
A '00 with 10 k, pretty good deal.
20 mpg is very low. I need to ask .... are you sure you're calculating it correctly.
Looking at you setup, I'd say you're running just about where you should be.
BTW .... when talking about the needle, if you hold the needle the same way it goes into the carb, the pointed end is the bottom and the round end it the top. When refering to the postion of the clip, it's always 3, 4, etc, from the top.

Doc,
Thanks for the info. The clip is in the 4th position. I calculated the gas milage while driving to work. It is 30 miles from my house to work and back. I can go to and from work 4 times before the refuel warning light comes on. If I am not mistaken the tank holds 5.3 gallons, and if I can go 120 miles before the light comes on that should be about 23mpg. It backfires sometimes when downshifting. I attributed this to the AIS still being on the bike. I did the WOT test today and the when I let off the throttle 1/8th the bike stays at the speed that currently going. I just took out some stock in Chevron, hopefully this will offset my gas bill. Any suggestions?

When the light goes on there's still a lot of gas left.
Best way to estimate mpg is to gas up and set trip to zero. Drive around and when the light goes on, go to the station and fill up the same way as you originaly filled it up. Note both the mileage on the trip meter and the amount of gas put in. Calculate mpg.
Based on your setup I cannot recommend anything. At 23 mpg it would probably be so rich that it would not run well.
Can you start the bike without the choke?
Do you smell gas when the bike is ideling?
Do you see a puff of black smoke when you twist the throttle?

Doc,
The bike will start without choke in warm weather. In cold weather it requires choke for a minute or so. This was the norm on all of the bikes that i have owned though. There is no black smoke and no gas smell. The only problem that I have is that when the bike warms up and I turn it off I have trouble starting it again. It sometimes takes a few cranks from the starter. Is this normal for this bike? I also have a friend who had the same bike and he reccommended that I move the clip to the 3rd position. I did that this morning and it was like riding a different bike. Throttle response was quicker and almost no backfire. Does moving the clip position down from 4 to 3 make it run more lean or rich? I don't know if this made any diffenrence in my mileage but I will top off the gas set my trip meter and check it on my next fill up. Thanks, Vince

Vince,
You move up from 4 to three, not down.
As you move the clip up the needle to the blunt end you are leaning out the mid-range.
In other words, if the clip was in the 4th postion from the top and you now moved it to 3rd from the top, you would be leaning it out.
Confused yet
Other than the 20 mpg it sounds normal to me.
The only uknown is the float level but let's see where your mpg ends up.
