OK, I'm following a Speedstar air assembly on ebay, and unless some bonehead bids it up to retail I'm seriously thinking of making the change. (Right now it's at $62 inc. shipping)

I figure I'll save buying filters in the long run since it comes with a K&N, but then it's also going to force me to re-jet. Now the $64,000 question: Is it really worth it? I see post after post about how this jetting is a royal PITA and that it's tough to get it right.

I'm not looking for the few extra horses or lbs. of torque, it's more about the economy of not having to buy paper filters over and over. I'm already running K&N in my Pathfinder so the cleaner and re-oil kit are already bought.

Should I just get the stock version of the K&N and be done with it, or can someone give me a convincing argument to go the whole 9 yards????

If you're happy with your bike the way it is get the K&N for the stock box I mean that. Nothing saying you have to change a thing.

AW Mark come on jetten half the fun of it. It really isn't that hard the more ya do it the better ya get at it just ask me. I'm sure others will chime in too. I'm just jurkin your chain a little.

No more paper filters coming apart. And you don't have to touch it
for 50,000 miles,unless you go riding in the desert
I bought the billet stock box cover when I bought the bike two years
ago,and for what it cost I'm staying with it.

I'm giving odds before June 1st Mark has a new air box. I predicted it a few post back when he put the pipes on. lmao. Welcome to the addiction!!

Mark7, don't worry about re-jetting, it's not as hard as it sounds..You have heard and seen my bike run, I have a carb on it that some folk would say shouldn't work.. but it does, and does it well..its just a case of getting the mix right at all stages of throttle, it won't be perfect at all settings, but you set it up for where you like to ride...IMHO

Lets see stock my bike peetered-out at 100,102.with air kit and exhaust
have had it up to 115.

The question is how fast do you want to get around that 18wheeler spittin rocks at ya

As most have already said, it's a presonal taste type of thing. If you like what you've got now (looks, performance, etc..), stick with it, but by all means, get the K&N filter for the stock air box. But if you do want better performance (and you've already got different pipes), I say take the leap and get the air kit. Rejetting isn't as hard as it seems, and that's coming from a person who hadn't touched a carburetor (and wouldn't!!) in 46 years of life until a year ago. I try to do most if not all of my own wrenching, but carbs intimidated me for some reason. But with the wealth of knowledge here, both in the members and the Tech Tip section, I took the leap and haven't looked back. That's not to say I'm an expert or even very accomplished, but so far I haven't screwed things up so bad I've had to pay someone bail me out either.

If you haven't already, I'd suggest you read through all the tech articles on carburetors (theory, rejetting, etc....) and familiarize yourself a little, then decide if it's something you want to take on. There's also some pretty good info here. (See link) It's geared towards HDs, but the theories are the same.

A little trick to win on e-bay,
wait till the last 10 seconds... best way to snipe what you want and only pay what you want.
people bid early and bid low, and keep driving it up, if you just sit back and watch. than bid in the last 10 seconds you either get it for what you were willing to pay or you don't...

with the airbox, you will probably just have to open the pms a little to keep it running right as the extra air flowing leans out the low end,

Thanks for all the input folks,it's been good to hear all the opinions. Now it seems that since it's been bid up to more than I'll pay and question of me getting this particular one is moot. Good info. to have should another one come my way. The comments from you out there about jetting have eased my concern about that part of it.

And yeah, I usually watch an item until the very end as long as it hasn't been bid up too close to retail. Then I'll put in my max bid and hope the automatic process works for me.

I just fail to understand when people bid up these ebay things and think "oh, I'm saving $10 over what I can buy it in a store, but then end up paying $20 to ship something!! The net result is actually paying MORE than you would if you just went to a local store.

Well, I can't expect to have gifts from the "V-Twin god" fall into my lap everyday.
