1700 Jetting 10 Months, 3 Weeks ago  
I had my bike re-jetted again at the dealer, It has run great the last few times i have rode it during the day, I took it out tonight the temp was around 68 and it did not run very well while crusing at 60 to 65 when i need to let off of the throtle a little to slow down the bike would cough thru the carb and felt like it was heasiting. Any thoughts?

Hey Signman, a few other bits of information will be helpful. What pipes, air kit, and altitude where you are operating. Any other mods to the bike. How many miles on your scoot and you say that it has been jetted again, why?
The settings sound pretty normal for a 1700 with pipes and an big air kit. PMS maybe a little too open.

It's always been my experiance that backfire through the carb is a lean condition. Mostly found in you pilot jet. If you have changed your air box to an aftermarket, you will need to increase the size over stock. I went from a 35 to a 40 pilot.

A 170 mik or dyna? Have you checked for air leaks? Bad gas?

Cobra pipes, BAK, They had to re-jet because it was still to rich,and the gas MPG went way down the re-jet solved that and the slight hesitation i had when holding between 50 & 55 in 4th it has runs great after that. I just had trouble with it last night when backing off of the gas it would cough.
The jet kit is what came with the BAK.

The hesitating that you describe actually sounds like "surging", which is a symptom of a LEAN condition.

I Checked the exhaust for air leaks and re torqued the bolts,
Went to daytona this weekend bike ran good on the way up we ran 75 to 85 mph on the way up. weather was warm when i had to back off the throtle a little than back on it would cough sometimes, On the way back temp. was cold about 41 every time i would back off or hold it between 50 and 60 in 4th it would cough out the carb, but would run great at 85 if you held it there.
the bike seems to run strong the rest of the time except for a cough some time.
Do i need to change the jetting again?
I guess if you want it done right you have to do it yout self, i just need some starting points to look for from my present jett settings, also i tryed turning in the PMS 1/4 turn it hestitated adn backed fire on de-cel, put it back and it went away.

You might try turning the accel screw in a turn. Have you checked your float level? Any air leaks on the intake side. Manifold to jugs, carb to manifold, and air cleaner to carb. Burning regular gas?

Perhaps a dumb question, but if you've been tinkering around with the jetting, have you checked then plugs also to make sure that they aren't fouled or anything.

Funny In all the rejetting I`ve done,have never run into alot of the problem you guys have run into.I`ve try the Dynojet 175 and the
Dynojet 190&195.The differance being more top end with the 190&195.And more back firing on decel with the 175 unless the PMS is at 4.
Dyno`s 37.5 pilot was way to big so I can`t figure out how Russ is running a 40 and not being too rich.The dealer put a 40ty in but they didn`t change my needle and it ran like sh*t and real lean.
To get in the middle of where I should be I finally bought some Mikuni jets and this is what I`m running now:
Dynojet needle,3rd clip stock spacing
Mikuni 170 Main Jet,Pilot stock,PMS at 2
Thunder Mfg. A/C with Amsol Micro air filter
RoadHouse Doolies.

My personal thoughts are that the Baron`s needle is less tapered than the
Dyno jet thus leaner,even tho I`ve never seen one.Just going on the problems you guys are having My Two Cents
