jetting with engin mods... 9 Months, 3 Weeks ago
Hey Everyone,

> Just noticed the jetting post. Good stuff. Mine does not fit any of the configurations mentioned exactly. I have a speedstar comp air filter, competition 2-1-2 MegaCone, competition high compression pistons(10.25:1), all Yamaha. Its is ported and polished and jettedwith the roadstar competition kit (SPD-4WM09-49-10) I haven't confirmed this for sure by checking, but I think it is set to recommended specs. That being 170 main jet, pilot jet at 60, 5th notch, and 3-1/4 turns PMS. I had been having some minor roughness at slow speeds like through a park at 15-30 mph. I had soot and carbon that I removed from the plugs now and then so I figured it was way too rich. I tried changing the stock plugs from NKG DPR7EA-9 to NKG D6EA. Color still carbon black but not as sooty and slightly browner.

> > > Other details that may help. Mileage went from 52 to 42 mpg with all the mods. Bike runs with a pleasing purr(deep smoothe rumble) sometimes and an annoying crackle other times. 75% pleasing and 25% not. Our elevation is 1800 feet and we often get to 3000 feet and sometimes to 500-700 feet. It could be my imagination but it seems happier at the lower elevations. Dealer is at 2400 feet.

I am open for suggestions and hopin' for some good tips to improve the mix a little. It runs pretty good but I think it could be dialed in just a bit better.

Thanks a lot.

Go back to the stock plugs .... you're tryig to fix the symptoms but are not addressing the problem.

- You should be running 91 fuel rather than the 87 used for stock.
- You're too rich on the lower end, specifically the main and the needle. I would start by moving the clip to the 4 th groove.
- I think you're also too rich on the pilot circuit. I don't know if the stock 35 will do but you may want to try it first and then move up if you get hesitation.
- You may also benefit from a Dyna 3000 ... you can change the curve to take advantage of the HC pistons.

Hey Doc,

Thanks for the tips! I checked out the evolution of your bike and it really has come a long way since 99! Wow. It looks great.

I figured based on my "old school" dirt bike days that the plug change was a bad idea, but that's what you get listening to the guys at the auto store. I will try the 4th groove and I never have put anything lower than 92 octane in the tank. The pilot jump seems like a big one and all I have here at the house is a 50. I will try a 35 if you think it will work though. I will also find out more on the Dyna 3000. Weather around here is not good for a ride yet so I have time to play around!

Thanks again,

biknski

I'm not sure where you need to be on the pilot. Once you put the 35 or 50 in you should see whether it gets better or not.

Good day from Snowy PA!

Just wondering what advantages one ignition module has over the other. Dyna 3000 and the Speedstar Competition are two i am considering. Any suggestions? I am running H/C, BAK, MegaCone, and it's ported and polished.

Get out and ride if you can!

Dyna allows you to play with the settings .... but that's not always a good thing.

Either one will do well .... buy the one you can get for the best price.

Whats up with the loose cable? 9 Months, 3 Weeks ago
Hey everyone,

I dove into my jetting/module spring cleaning today. Removed the air kit, tank, changed the plugs back to original, and was looking over the carb project to see what all is involved when I noticed that the one cable from the throttle grip(the inside one) was just dangling behind what I think is the cable stay that it is SUPPOSED to be nutted to. It appears that both should be fastened in the same way. I could be wrong but my curiosity has got the best of me. If it is supposed to be fastened there, what effect on the performance would this have? No idea how this could have happened!

Thanks. Gotta go for now but I will be anxous to hear from someone on this one.

That's the throttle return cable. You can leave it that way but if the pull cable breaks the throttle won't close.

Just hook it back up.
