Jetting (imagine that) 5 Years, 10 Months ago
Ok I've been reading the forum for awhile and tried a few things that was posted. I'm still having problems. Here's the skinny I have 06 RS, Hard Chrome 3", stock air, mikuni 190 main, mikuni 40 pilot, pms 3 1/4, no plug in the air box by the rear brake lever(not sure but think thats the ais). Runs great when warm, sucks real bad when cold (exhuast backfire, feels like aft jugs not there, stalls, puttering sound). Tried all sorts of ways for starting full choke, half choke and no choke. Dealer is no help says "it runs cold", but thats nothing new here. I think I can get some help here.... Hope so anyway!

Post edited by: Lipstand, at: 2006/07/07 18:18

A Mikuni 190 seems a bit large bro'. The new R* come with 182.5..I suggest to go with an aftermarket air box as you already have the exhaust and you will benefit from it. What is your location and altitude??

Welcome lipstand

What do you mean by "No plug in the air box" Have you partially disconnected the AIS? Or does that mean you haven't touched it?

I had Cobra slip ons, dealer installed with partial dyno kit (175 main and needle). Replaced becuase top pipe blued something fierce. After reading on the Dyno site found that a plug is installed in the AIS. It's installed right behind the AIS filter in the tube. Looks like a little rubber tubing cap. I say partial because dealer kept the rest of the kit, that won't happen again. After replacing pipes with hard chromes took it out and seemed to run better.

Forgot to mention that the clip is on the 2 1/2 position of the needle (top to bottom).

Is your needle a Dynojet needle or what brand? Barons needles have a slim taper to them and come with Mikuni jets. The Yamaha needle has a different profile also, so depending on what needle your working with...I installed the Barons jet/needle kit in mine and has worked perfectly since day one. Try going to the 3rd position and see what happens. As you move your clip up or down, the low position from the blunt end raises your needle and vice-versa, make one change at a time. Check to see where your PMS is set at. Idle your bike and turn your PMS in, while counting turns, until the motor stumbles. Then turn it back out, also counting turns until you're past the good idle and motor stumbles again then set it in the middle of these two points.

Forgot to mention that the clip is on the 2 1/2 position of the needle (top to bottom)

To rich on the top (190 main) and too lean on the needle. You were probably blueing the pipes 'cause it was too lean on the mid-range (needle); that's were the throttle is most of the time. Fattening up the hi end (main) can fix it up, as the main leaks a bit at mid-range, but your bike is all out of proportion.

I'd recommend re-starting. With the stock air-box you don't need to be running anything different than the stock settings. However, as you already have an aftermarket needle in there, I'd recommend starting with:

Main - 182.5 Mikuni (stock jet)
Needle - 3th clip from the top (blunt end)
PMS - 3 turns out

Then do the WOT test to see if the main is not too lean (should not be), but if not, then try a 175 main, etc.

Once you have the main worked out then we can start on the needle and PMS.

And once you have done all this you'll become a carb expert.

ya I agree with everything here.. you're way to rich... I can't believe they put in a 40 pilot for a stock air box... you want my opinion? Go out and buy yourself a nice baron's high flow air box... use there jet kit and needle... or for that fact you could probably keep what you have in there now .... the extra air will balance the extra fuel you're adding right now... you can also consider doing the stock air box modification that will also add more air and give you more power... all you do is drill 3 or 4 large holes in the back of the air box, simple to do, costs you nothing... will really add a kick in the pants... then you could add a K&N stock replacement filter the next time you change the filter ... or for 180 bucks you can pick up a open filter and nice chrome cover ~Guido
