Newby need help! 2 Years, 6 Months ago

Maybe you guys could help me in the right direction. I got a Barons big air kit and a carb from a friend. Huge improvement in the performance side, BUT I lost about 10mpg at the same time! I went from about 49mpg to about 39mpg with this change. I have V&H Longshots already on b4 the swap. The carb is a stock '03 carb that was rejetted for the Barons BAK and was an my friends bike up until he went stage 2. Perfect on his bike. Thought of have an EGA test done at the shop. Should I have this much loss in Gas Mileage with this swap?

without knowing what main jet you have in there we don't REALLY know what direction to tell you to go... now that being said, if you're gas milage is crappy.. you're probably to rich... and most companies recommendations for jetting is to rich.. you can try to adjust the PMS as suggested in the tech tips section... and then as you find the middle ground on the PMS, go in a 1/4 turn at a time, until she starts to run like crap and then come out 1/4 turn (must be tested with the air cleaner on!)... but like I said, we need to know the jet size and needle brand and what slot the needle is set on (blunt end up count the slots downward)... I've got mine set a little lean and I get better gas milage now than I did stock... ~Guido

Post edited by: davehrn, at: 2006/07/10 09:27

davehrn is right, the dynojet kit had me jetted real rich in there set ups.
DJ200main,37.5 pilot,needle on 4th clip,3 1/2 PMS.I`m now at DJ175main,
35 stock pilot,needle on 4th clip,2 1/2 PMS.Just changed it this weekend
so don`t know what my milage gains are.But look how far I`ve come down with
no real change in performace that I can see(adverse that is)

The jetting recommendations that I received with my BAK were much too rich. If you followed them then I would suggest you lean it out.
What is the current carb setup.

Guys, thats just it, I bought the carb and Barons BAK from another fella. He lives in another climate zone. the jetting on the carb was already done when I got it. I think the best thing for me to do at this time is to tear into the carb and see what jetting is done. thanks for your help and I will keep you informed once I am done.

My pleasure.... we've all become "experts" by doing what you're doing right now... tinker, tinker, tinker.... so next time someone comes along you'll be able to do the same... all of us here may have slightly different thoughts about the carb... but we're all experts at our own bikes at our altitudes and our driving conditions and our mods....
there is one more thing I forgot to tell you... we've had a few people complain that their PMS became unscrewed after a few thousand miles due to vibration this will cause you to get progressively worse and worse gas milage... so some of us put teflon tape on the threads... I've also seen that loctite makes a product that prevents vibration back out... if I remember correctly it's in a purple tube and just makes the threads sticky without locking it in.. ~Guido

Post edited by: davehrn, at: 2006/07/20 06:41
