Ok back from the test ride. I still have the backfire, bogging, puttering, shutting off and one jug problem. That's all at start up takes awhile to warm 10 min or so before that goes away. After that it runs great no problems. WOT test maintain accelleration seems ok. With throttle at set position and lower speeds it seems to lunge like its telling me to get on it or back off. Here's the settings now:

Mikuni 185 main (couldn't get 182.5)
Mikuni 35 pilot (stock)
PMS 3 turns out
Dyno needle 3rd position (blunt end down)
Stock airbox
Hard Chrome 3" Bigshots
No plug in the AIS (comes w/ Dyno kit)

Post edited by: Lipstand, at: 2006/07/09 13:42

Lipstand I think you will continue to have problems if you mix differant jets with differant needles.Baron`s needle is defferant that yamaha`s or dyno jet even tho Baron use`s yamaha jets.I bought a dyno jet kit and have be pleased with the results.Alot of the guys here use the Baron`s.So if you don`t want to change to Dynojet jets get a Baron`s needle Any help! any Time!

Ps: I`d loose the stock air box

Post edited by: vegasdave, at: 2006/07/09 14:05

The 182.5 is the stock jet so you should have it in hand. With the stock airbox and aftermarket pipes you should go down from the 182.5 not up.

You are much too rich on the main and need to correct it first.

Doc the dealer never gave me back my OEM parts or the rest of the Dyno kit so basically I got screwed. Going to the shop tommorrow to get the 182.5. Your saying I'm to rich thats because of the stock air box right? It does seem to run better with what I did today. I'll try again tommorrow. Hey I just what to say thanks to all thats trying to help I apprecite it.

"Your saying I'm to rich thats because of the stock air box right?"

Even with an aftermarket airbox you would be too rich.

With an aftermarket needle, the main jet should be between 167.5 to 172.5.

With the stock needle, I would recommend starting with stock main and then moving down until you fail the WOT test. Normally when you just change the pipes you don't need to rejet.

Oh my gosh! Come on Doc, HE'S NOT TO RICH, HE'S TO LEAN. The popping and backfiring you are getting when it is cold is due to a LEAN condition in the pilot jet. With the needle set to the 2nd notch, the PMS at 2 1/2, your stock 2006 jets should be:
Mikuni 40mm Carb:
Main = 182.5
Pilot = 35.0
Air Bleed = 2.0.

You say your Pilot is now 40.0, which is good, but did you change the air bleed? It should be a 1.3. The 185 might be a little strong, but it's got nothing to do with the cold popping problem. Some of the popping may be coming from the AIS system, and it is recommended to get the $25 dollar block off kit.

Popping and backfiring when cold is caused by a LEAN condition. Your plugs will be black on one jug, and white on the other, or partially black and white. It's wierd, and goes against everything you've ever learned about reading plugs.

I speak from experiance. I own a 2006 with the same problems you described. I fixed it as described above.

But, you don't have to listen to me. Keep going leaner and burn a piston or two. It's your money.

Later,
Russ

If he`s using the Dyno jet needle Russ he`s gonna be flowing ALOT more fuel!
The stock needle looks like a tree trunk compared to the Dyno jet one.(Slight exageration)The Mikuni 185 main is about as large as the DynoJet 200(Tech tips section is for diamater of hole size,Mikuni vs DynoJet.)
I think your right about the ASI,My pipes could`nt even be put on till
it was blocked off.My personal thoughts ie that the air and pipe kits should be done together Loose the stock air Box,Block the AIS.
hell even had to remove all the California crap from mine!

Re:Jetting (imagine that) 5 Years, 10 Months ago
Thanks guys. I am aware of the differences between the Dyno Jet and stock stuff, and I'm sure there is a difference in the needle sizes. I was only trying to explain that the cold popping this guy was getting was a Lean carb, not a rich one. The MainJet is another issue. However, if I'm not mistaken, the lower you go on the clip on the needle, the RICHER it gets, so if he is on the 3rd clip, maybe he should move that up to the 2nd or even 1st notch. The needle, of course, affecting the mid-throttle, is only one problem.

After reading ALL THE POSTS, and reading Lipstand's settings, he's still a little off in the adjustments. Maybe he should get a better jet kit. I used one from Kuryakyn, and it's the same as Mikuni, just a different needle which has notches as opposed to the stock which does not.

Everyone is so touchy. Can't we all just drink beer and turn wrenches?
