PLEASE HELP ME!!! 4 Years, 1 Month ago
Im sure this has been asked a thousand times, so i will ask again LOL. I am brand new to the forum and have learned a lot already, these forums are great. OK here is the question. I just bought an 01 Roadstar, he had some engine mods done now trying to figure out just what. There are vance and hinds longshots, hypercharger with K&N filter and he said he had somthing done with the ignition i was going to check now that i know where to look for the box. He said the work was done by the local dealer. Now for the problems, this bike takes forever to warm up. I have had a lot of bikes 4 wheelers etc. and this thing will run for 20 min and i still sputters for a long time after riding till it gets going. It runs pretty well once it is warm not really any backfiring. I changed the plugs set the gaps according to shop manual, not really any difference. The old plugs where really white which is telling me it seems running lean. Would this effect warmup time? What size jets and needle settings should i use with my setup? The dealer said he would go by the Dynojet chart which i know is not always accurate and if the jetting wasnt right he would have to charge me again to redo it. I was thinking if i could get the right settings on here i will just have him set them accordingly. Sorry for the long post just trying to give history on the bike. Thanks for any help

Yes, the jet setting will certainly effect the warm up time. With the white plugs it does sound like you're running lean. Let us know what your elevation is where you live and we'll be able to give you some other members settings at similar elevations. If he said the ignition was changed/modified my guess would be that he or someone else put it a Dyna3000 ignition, a very popular modification.

My one piece of advice is to get your hands dirty. Learn how to do the carb adjustments yourself, because it's going to take several adjustments to get it tuned in, and that can get expensive. Afterall, you want to spend your money on gas and chrome, not endless revisits to the stealership.

I am tearing it apart as we speak LOL. Yes i just found a dynatek 3000 module, trying to figure out what it is set at. He added an rpm gauge and it is set at 5000rpm found that out yesterday while riding. As far as elevation i live in Ohio elevation of 991 ft. Let me know where to start on my jetting and i will go from there. How will the dynatek effect jetting? I thought it just changed rev limiter, what exactly does it do? I guess your jetting will be affected at higher rpms, i dont know LOL, thanks again for your help. What brand of jets are best? Hate to spend money for a whole kit if i only need a few sizes, maybe i will drink enough beers and attempt it myself LOL.

Good start.

As you've noticed the 3000 has various settings. The 32A setting is most like stock. 34A seems to be a popular setting; 36A is a bit more aggressive. Leave the B side alone unless you have HC pistons or big bore setup.

5000 is a good limit for the rpm; there's little performance benefit about 5000.

DJ or Mikuni jet kits ..... doesn't matter which. Just open it up and check out what you have in terms of needle setting and jets.

Read this to start ..... Does my bike need to be jetted?

I'd invest in a Baron's jet kit, but I'm partial since that's what I've got. It comes with an assortment of Mikuni jets and a custom Baron's needle which is easily adjusted.

Here are my settings at 1,211 ft. elevation:

  • Needle with clip on the 3rd groove from the top (the blunt end). One silver washer and the spacer underneath it.

  • Main jet is a Mikuni 170

  • Stock Pilot Jet

  • PMS set at 3.25 turns.

A lot of guys on here have their jet settings in their profile, so you can look in there for some comparisons too. Look for guys with similar elevations to you, it does make a big difference.

I have the Dyna3000 set at the 34A settings and rev at 5000 RPM. The 34A settings comes out to; off, on, on, on, on, off (the last two switches don't matter unless you're using the B settings).

Hope that helps some. Also, if you do end up getting a Baron's jet kit, I'd also get one of their PMS screws--they allow you to adjust the PMS with your fingers instead of having to take the carb down each time you want to adjust it. They're also fairly inexpensive.

THANKS EVERYONE FOR YOUR HELP!!!! I just looked at he back of dynatek, im assuming if the switch is down its off. If so here is the order of the switches, down,up,up,down,up,down,up,up....... i will go on thier websie to check on off position. If i have it correct that would be 5000rpm, 30B advance, 3 Deg retard. Someone was saying it should be on A setting unless i have the big bore kit. How can i tell if this has been done? Today it backfired at startup also??? This bike has a single carb right?

Single carb...yes. Big bore kit , He would have told you if it had been done, it's not a cheap mod , and it would have been a selling point. The Dyna 3000 has a small on or off (can't remember which) written on it, adjust to 34A (if needed) and try it from there. BB

Brashears gave you the correct setting for 34A

Its still cold out and the hypercharger really lets in the cold air and makes the bike stumble, till its warmed up, I have the K&N air kit and turn my idle up a little during the colder season riding, and if it gets warm out just dial it back down a twist. Sometimes the lean plugs could be carb a little varnished from winter storage not letting all the fuel flow, try one of the fuel cleaners/top end lube, I like MMO or SeaFoam small amounts good for keeping everything clean.

Welcome to the clinic & good luck with the R*

these bikes are slow to warm up. Look for a post from a few days ago that says "new 1600 jetting headache" Since our elevation and tempare fairly close. If you are lean though it should pop through the carb. Hope it all work for ya.
good luck and good rides
