Rev Question 4 Years, 1 Month ago
Hey guys,

Quick question about my new jet/BAK setup. The bike runs great now that I've pretty much got it dialed in. I do have one issue that I wanted to see if anyone else has experience and might have some advice on.

When I pop the throttle on the bike at idle it wants to stutter or backfire through the carb like it's suddenly choked out instead of rev. It only happens from idle. Is this a Pilot jet issue? I'm running the stock Pilot jet currently. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

See my profile for mods and jet settings.

thanks!

That's called blipping and roadies don't like that. The leaner you jet the less they like it. You can try turning your accel screw in a little at a time and see if it helps.

Brashears , being that they are pumper carbs, there is a big shot of fuel right off idle delivered to the motor to get her going and when it's at idle , it does sorta flood it momentarily, thus these bike aren't fond of "blipping". Some guys adjust the accelerator pump down some with good results......I just lay off the blipping and mines fine. Hard habit to break though. BB

Thanks guys!

Good to know that it's normal. I'll just have to learn to be a better owner. I sure do like the sound of that sudden blast of decibels it produces.

Guess I'll just have to learn to live with the ROAR as I pull away from traffic at the greenlight.

Mine doesn't mind the blipping a bit,, but I have a different carb on it, doesn't have the diaphram or the butterfly, Seems like the throttle is connected directly to the slide..I like it a lot..

Just to clarify .... are you blipping the throttle or are you cranking the throttle .... and it chokes out.

If the later then you should try turning the accelerator screw in 1 turn and see if it improves. You may be getting either too much or too little gas.

My carb backfire came back a little with my recent jet change. I ended up going in 2 turns on the accel. screw and its gone.

Hey Doc,

It's only when I blip it, if I actually rev it it catches up and runs fine. Think it's just a dirty little habit that I'm gonna have to quit doin'...

Thanks for the head's up, Blackroadie! Next time I'm tinkering with the filter off I'll turn the pump in a turn and see if it improves.
