Jet adj- what to do next 2 Years, 5 Months ago
I have an '05 Midnight 5800 mile, Not sure where to start, but I cannot seem to get the jetting set right. When the ride was stock, I was getting an average 40 mpg. I added a set of HardKrome K-2's with the stock jetting the mpg stayed about the same (stock breather still used), but lost a lot of low end tourqe. I followed HardKrome & Dyno recommendation and had kit put in w/175 jet (done by dealer but not again) Running very rich, mpg 29-30.I should note the stock set up was runnig slightly rich to begin with. I changed the jet size to 165, mpg went to 30-31, not much change. I when on a 2000mile ride with wife and luggage, sitll got 30mpg. When I got home I took the stock air filer out (for test only- not recommended), mpg went to 34, still running rich. I do have a Kuryakyn pro-r coming. Next I changed the needle from the 4 ring down to the 3 ring down last nignt don't know the results yet,. I need a bit of help on locating the PMS adjustment, I have not taken the carb completly off yet, but there appears to be a threaded hole on the side of carb facing rear tire, but cannot see anything in it. (I know I sound like a rookie, will for bike's I am, built many small engines and V8's). Please help with the location & type of head on the PMS adjustment so I can check to see what the delear did, and I am concerned that I have went the opposite direction with the Jetting from other postings I have read.
Hope not too much info, but maybe enough to get some help.

Haven't done any jetting myself but i can point you at the PMS screw. Go here and scroll down. you'll see a pic of the carb with the screw circled in red and below a pic of the brass cover you have to remove. The screw has a flat blade slot.

And this talks about dialing the PMS in.

My carb does not look like this one I believe mine is 41 mikuni??? It has a diaphram on top, with a side-in,side-out air flow. Thanks Musky, I will pull the carb completely off on Sunday and see what I can find. Hope the screw did not vibrate out, as Doc said in another posting. I am begining to think the PMS may have been truned all the way in and not backed out by dealer. I also forgot to mention that I do not dare touch the choke, starts without choke at all, cold or hot when I pull choke even the slightest it dies.
Thanks for the advice a will definitely give the PMS a close check.

Post edited by: Silver_Falcon, at: 2006/07/28 11:21

Did you buy your bike used? Stock bike has the HSR40 on it.

There are Mikuni 40, 42, and 45's. I'm unaware of a 41.

Doc, sorry not replied sooner, out of town. The bike was new, completly stock.
From what I can tell, the specs show the carb to be a 40mm Mikuni CV.
I set the following configuration today.
dyno 175 jet, needle on 3rd ring from top, PMS 2 turns out, Kuryakyn intake, Hardkrome pipes. The choke now seems to work (weather to hot to tell how well). Now I will have to ride some to see how the mpg does.
Thanks to everyone for their postings on this site, great place for info.
