New 2003 performance upgrades 5 Years, 10 Months ago
Hi, I am new to the R* this month with a brand new 2003 stock/200miles and am very excited of all the improvements to come and in gaining some extra HP & torque. I’m glad to see such a well experienced group here in this site to help me along.

I will be doing various upgrades myself as I feel confident in reading other posts that have also performed upgrades on their own.

As time allows me to, I will be doing the following:

1. Baron’s Big Air Kit with re-jet
2. Hand porting the manifold (Buck’s tech tip)
3. Cleaning up with an AIS removal kit
4. Stage 1 on the stock exhaust
5. Dyna 3000 ignition module

Being a brand new bike still with only 200 miles, should I wait to upgrade until after my first 600 mile service, or does it matter?

Does this set-up seem good, any changes to the parts, or order of installation?

Any advice on carb settings to use with this setup and the Barons supplied re-jet kit at sea level? (Main, needle, clip, PMS)

I am looking for any information that would help make these upgrades easier and to help dial in the Roadstar.

Thanks,
Mike in San Jose, CA

Welcome mochaStar

This is just my opinion based on my thoughts. I haven't jetted mine. If you are going to put an air kit on, jet it, and port the manifold you might want to consider more than just a stage 1 exhaust. You'll have quite a bit more air coming in but not a real big improvement on air going out. Might not get your moneys worth in my opinion. And you don't have to jet, do and air kit, or port if all you are doing is stage 1 on the exhaust. The dealers will do the air kits, jet, and exhaust before it leaves the showroom floor if you want them to so it shouldn't hurt your bike if done right. That's just my 2 cents. Congrats on the bike. Many happy miles!

Welcome to the Clinic Mike. There are also a number of R* forums on Delphi that you should take a look at.

WOW, a brand new 2003. The dealer must be a poor salesman to have kept it that long.

I would wait until after the first service interval before doing any changes on the bike. You never know if something might pop up and it's always easier to deal with the dealer if the bike has not been modified.

Don't do the BAK without new pipes or going to Stage 3. It's just a waste of money. The high volume of air that the BAK lets in will just be hampered by the restrictive exhaust. Stage 1 does not substaintially 'free' the exhaust.

If you can't do both BAK and pipes then do the pipes first as you can use the stock jetting and then add the BAK later.

On the other hand it you just don't like the stock aircleaner, but like the stock pipes, then get the BAK. I don't have experience with that type of setup so the jetting will have to be trial and error. With Stage 1 pipes, probably the 167.5 main, needle on the 4th clip and PMS at 3 to start. See how it runs and then refine from there.

Do the BAK and porting together, then you don't need to rejet twice.

The Dyna 3000 is a bit of an overkill if you're not going to do any engine work.

You might also consider a 32 tooth pulley. Gives you more 'pull' for around-towun driving. The 31 is even more dramatic but I find it a bit 'buzzy' on the highway.

Hi All, This is very useful and insightful, I will definitely incorporate into my upgrade plan. It makes a lot of sense what you are saying about the air intake and exhaust stages. I can do the custom stage 3 job on my stock pipes; I was just under the impression that it would be too loud.

Is there a way to do the stage 3 exhaust flow without having it too loud?
What would the jetting be with this setup with the Stage 3 exhaust?

I don’t like the stock air cleaner as it sticks out too far and doesn’t give enough air to the engine. A double bang for my buck is to install the BAK and port the manifold and do the jetting at the same time.

In reading many of the happy R* owner reviews of the Dyna 3000, it seemed to offer a wider range of RPM that makes for longer runs through the gears and smoother engine vibes at high speeds. This sounds like a good product as long as the stock internal engine parts will hold up to 5000 rpm, anything more than that would be harmful. I read about the Dyna 2000 rev limiter as an option to increasing the Revs, but when shopping I assumed that the Dyna 3000 was the successor so I chose that. I will try and do the BAK, manifold, and exhaust first, give it a ride and if I still feel like the revs aren't high enough then consider the Dyna.

Thanks for the welcome and information.

Hi, The upgrade to the stock exhaust is at this point a temp improvise until I have more funds for some nice pipes. However, now that I think about it, I don't really want to hack into the stock pipes and am now considering skipping that mod. and getting the new pipes.

This bike came to me as a suprise while at the dealer I was checking out some v-stars that was more within my budget. I noticed this brand new 03 mocha sitting there with zero miles on it and a blow-out sale price on it of 8,500. I compared that to the new v-star in the same price range and decided on the R*. The larger 1600 cc bike was a better fit for my size and I could keep it for a long time without too much yearning for some more power.

This is where I am now exploring my options to unleash the monster in this R*.

Thanks,

The Dyna 3000 is an upgraded 2000. Really not that much different but the 3000 is easier to instal as it's plug and play.

If funds are short then skip the Dyna for now. There's not that much above the limit, even with new pipes and aircleaner. But if you're still looking just to raise the rev limiter then go with the Revmaster.
