bad gas mileage 2 Years, 5 Months ago
Everyone, I am new to the sight and need some help. I bought an 04 1700 Roadstar a couple of months ago and have been trying to get better gas mileage out of it. I just came back from a 1700 miles trip and could not get over 30 MPG out of it. In fact I was down under 25 at times. We were running two up with about 40 pounds of gear. Anyway, I have the 3" hard krome exaust, DJ 170 on main, pilot(whatever came in the kit) and the needle currently is in the 5th slot. The air box is stock, but I'm thinking of going to a modified air box. PLEASE HELP! This gas mileage sucks! After reading a lot of the posts and even more fustrated. Suggestions???

Move the needle to the 4th slot.

Are you at near sea level?

Doc, thanks for the reply so quickly, I am anxious to work on it cause I am heading back down to Sturgis this weekend. Anyway, we are at 1800 feet in Bismarck. The jet kit/pipes were put on prior to me purchasing the bike, so I have not checked to air/fuel mix yet. I plan on checking that tonight.

Doc, actually now that I think about the needle it is in the 4th slot. It was in the 3rd slot and then on our trip this weekend a guy told me I should raise it so I moved it to the 4th. Even on the third trip I would only get 27-29 mpg. It is running like crap now in the 4th notch. I just came back from lunch with it and it's really popping.

You don't raise the clip to 3 from 4, you lower it from 3 to 4. In other words the slots are 'numbered' from the top (#1) (blunt end, the way the needle sits in the carb). The pointed end is the bottom.

If you're heading to Sturgis this weekend then I'd advise putting the stock jetting back in until you get back. With aftermarket pipes and stock airbox the bike will run OK with stock jetting.

If you want to re-jet using the DJ kit then I'd recommend the DJ180 main, needle on 4 and PMS at 2.5 out. Be aware that jetting is complex and one usually does not get it right the first time, or second or third .... .

Regarding the popping, is the AIS removed?

How are you going to check the air/fuel mix?

BTW ... if you live in Bismarck you could walk to Sturgis if you start today. That way you don't need to worry about jetting.

If you used the pilot jet that came with the kit(DJ37.5)it`s bigger than the
stock(35).My set up RH Dooleys,Thunder Tear Drop air kit,DJ175 main,
DJneedle 4th clip,Stock pilot,PMS at 3.I do 75 & 80 most of the time with the
wife 38 to 40 MPG.Alone about 42 to 44 MPG.

with the stock air box,lot of fuel no air, could still be rich,Maybe?
Can`t remember what DJ set up was for there stage one.But they tend to be real rich in there setups

Post edited by: vegasdave, at: 2006/08/08 14:57

Don't the holes get smaller as the numbers go up?

Post edited by: Musky, at: 2006/08/08 15:17

Guys, first of all I can't thank you enough for the quick responses.

Doc, I guess what I meant on air/fuel mix was checking how far out the PMS is set. In regards to the jet, DJ180, do they lean out smaller the number or larger the number?? I'm thinking I should get a modified air box before I start my testing on tuning journey. Also what exactly is the AIS and what gain would I get from removing it?

Vegasdave, thanks for giving me your set up, I'd would be tickled pink if I could get over 40 mpg. My brother has a HD Roadking with a 103 stroker and get gets 47 plus with it.

I just came home from Sturgis yesterday, lots lots lots lots lots of people!!!!

As the numbers for the main go up, the mix becomes richer. A DJ180 is richer than a DJ170.

For AIS info check out .... http://roadstarclinic.com/content/view/47/105/

If the AIS is still on, you will get popping from the exhaust with the HK's.

This article should also help you understand carb principles .... http://roadstarclinic.com/content/view/56/96/

These guy's are great for help and suggestions, I went throught a jetting set up problem with their help. Was getting about 30-32mpg w/1 up or 2 up.
Thought I would pass along my setup in case it may help. I have the HardKrome K2's (believe 2 3/4&quot, Dynojet 175, Needle at 3rd slot from top, PMS at 2 1/2 turns out, Kuryakyn breather. I now am getting 44 mpg. I ride to and from work approx. 14 mile one way. Have not had an a chance to ride 2 up for any distance yet.
O, by they way my bike is an '05 Midnight 1700 (Love it)
