Figured I'd better start my own thread insted of hijacking the other. Besides this could be long.

Yeah, already lost. Think I'll just weld the pilot in there and work around it. OK, Looked a bunch off settings the last few days and this is what I've come up with for a starting point. If you see something wrong or something I'm missing speak out.

Baron's BAK w/jet kit
Baron's needle on 4th groove, washer, spacer
167.5 main, stock pilot
2 turns out on PMS
unported stock manifold
Cobra LoBoy shotguns

Once I get the BAK I'll figure out where the 4th groove is and what a washer and spacer look like.

Yes, that's a good place to start.

You could also go with a 170 main as some bikes seem to run better with it.

Just to clarify for others, the Baron's jet kit has Mikuni jets not DJ.

Once you have the carb off it's a good idea to check the float level after you put the jet in. Sometimes it 'accidentally' moves.

I did have to go on up on the pilot jet when I ran the ProPipe but with the Nasties I found it ran better with the stock jet. I believe it helped me fix some problems at takeoff (it's been a long time ). I believe it's best to leave it alone unless other changes don't fix the problem.

I'm running a bit rich at idle/low throttle that I have not been able to correct with the other systems and have been meaning to try one size smaller pilot than stock.

Been doing some more reading over on the RSR site. A couple guys just posted that they are running BAK, 172.5, 4th groove, stock pilot, PMS at 3 to 3.5. One guy said 250 miles / tank. Both said they run like raped apes. One is an 05, the other an 06. This is different from what I've been reding. Any thoughts?

Thanks

I know I'm asking you folks pretty specific question on something pretty general.

"I know I'm asking you folks pretty specific question on something pretty general."

I think it's more like 'asking a general question on someting pretty specific'.

You need to remember that the settings that are recommended are just a starting point. Where you eventually end up depends on your bike, your environment and your willingness to 'refine' those settings.

For example, look at vegasdave. He's running settings (DJ 175) that I would not normally recommend but it's working for him. On the other hand, I'd no longer recomend anyone start with a 172.5 Mikuni.

You could start with the settings that you posted in your first post, my recommendation to start with a 170 or something else. In the end, where you end up will depend upon how satisfied you are with the way your bike is running.

Man does it piss me off when I type a long reply, press submit and find out I've been logged off.

Hey Doc

I know it's trial and, uh, trial some more. Just trying to get a feel for things.

Are you talking about the blank page that shows up when you hit submit? That has happened to me a few times. I just hit escape and my post is right there all ready for someone to read.

Didn't know you were a touchy/feely kind of guy.

My best advice is to go with those that have a lot of hands-on experience. Odo has plenty of it so I'd go with his suggestion.

You'll always find bikes running with carb settings that at first glance don't 'fit the mold.'

If I leave myself logged on for a long period of time the site sometimes logs me off. If I'm unaware that I've been logged off and respond to a post, when I hit submit the reply is lost.

I'm going to have to be more careful how I word things. I've been called alot of things in my life but never that. Nope, Just meant that I know there are no givens in jetting. I'm not going to be able to get numbers that say "here ya go, do this and you'll be set". But I'd like to zero it in a little before I start if I can. I have to go now. My soaps on on.

I think if I`d had a DJ180 I would have probley used it.BUT!! all the
circuits interact,so needle set point and PMS would be at different setting.
When I checked my Spark plugs at my current setting I shut off my bike as
soon as I got home, wanting to get a more realistic reding of the plugs.I`ve
seen lean and I`ve seen rich and they were in the middle.Still get a little
backfiring but only on HARD decel. So as hard as it is to leave them alone
I have. ...........for now

Hi Doc,

Just got my 06 r* dynoed at 74 hp and 104 ft/lb torque.
Bike runs very well.

BAK
Barons Jet kit 167.5, 3rd clip, PMS @ 2.5 turns
HK big 3's straights.
city/highway 43 mpg

I pulled the plugs after 800 kms with the above settings and they look like new, no carbon other than a bit on the threads of the plug. Where do you suggest I start to richen the circuit.

Nice numbers!

I you want to richen it then put a shim under on the needle or go to the fourth clip. That will richen up the midrange.
