MPG Issue....Again 8 Months, 1 Week ago
Not sure what I need to do, but I can't seem to get better than 35-37 MPG, no matter how I jet this thing. Thought for sure I had it this time... Probably a little on the lean side, but running good with what seemed to be good mileage. Until I stopped for gas this morning. According to the gas gauge I had just under a quarter of a tank of gas, which meant I had used a little more than 3 gallons, with 128.9 miles on the trip meter, indicating that I should be getting right at 40 MPG. Wrong!!!! Damn float must be sticking a little because it took 3.6 gallons to fill it, giving me 35.8 MPG. Thats a pretty even mix of highway and in-town riding, but it still sucks!

So here is my current set up; HK 3" Dual Sideburners, air intake ala Mr. Cancilla plus a cover, Barons ported manifold, DJ175 main, stock 35 pilot jet, DJ needle with washer/clip in 3rd from top/spacer and PMS out 3 1/2 turns. Accelerator pump has also been adjusted one turn out/richer. Haven't checked the float level recently, but it was good the last time I checked it....last spring. And my elevation is 600 ft.

So, any suggestions??? I know no two bikes are going to be identical, but if you are getting 40 MPG or better and your elevation is 600 ft. plus or minus a couple hundred, I'd like to hear what your set up is to compare to and see if I can't get back into this range. Curious to see if jet and needle manufacturer (Mikuni or DynoJet) is a factor. I also know there has been talk about "winter blend" fuel and how it effects MPG. But does it make that big of a difference and should I maybe wait a couple of weeks before making any changes???

I know I shouldn't complain as long as the bike is running good, but with gas prices creeping towards $4/gal (and hearing how others are getting 45-50 MPG!!), I just can't deal with 35-37 MPG.

Sorry for the long, drawn out post, but any help and or input is appriciated.

In The Wind,
Aaron

I'm right around the same as you are. I'm also at 600ft, but with a 170 main, 35 pilot and needle on the 4th clip, Cobra Slashdowns and Mr. Can...I mean MY air cleaner! Floats good, but all my traveling is from one bar to the next! Rarely go 20 to 30 miles in a row unless I'm on a bike run. I bought the bike to be cool, not save on gas money!

I'm getting right at 36MPG on my '04 with NO carb or jetting adjustments at all. The only engine mod.(if you can even call it that) would be the duals. Other than that, stock all the way.

I'd love to be getting 40+MPG out of my girl, but I don't think she's got it in her...or if she does my right hand keeps wringing it out.

I'm happy since compared to my Pathfinder the Roadie sips gas.

Try going in 1/2 to 1 full turn on the PMS.

Aaron--

I'm jetted identically to you (DJ jet & needle), and I never got above 36 MPG. But...I am at 6500 ft and have the tall & wide Yami shield and the hard bags. Big Bear can tell you how much the elevation here kills power & MPG...when he came through on his Roadie, he said both suffered.

Now, the one thing I have been able to do that actually helped the MPG was Musky's choke chop. I ended up trimming nearly 1/5" off two weeks ago, and on the next full tank I got 39.853 MPG...not that I'm counting.

It fast, free & easy, and well worth a try.

Thanks, Musky!

Heck no, I wasn't using that ride as a MPG check. It was all around town with limited freeway miles.

I'll be checking my MPG on the trip this weekend though. I figure if I can keep the speed at a reasonable level (and considering the latest ticket I will be) then I can get a good idea of what my average will be.

I'll report back.

The Rejex (thin-film polymer coating) came in the mail today, so maybe if I rush down and put on a coat it will make everything so much more slippery that I can get that 50MPG I've heard about, but never seen. We'll see.

Re:MPG Issue....Again 8 Months, 1 Week ago
I have had my 2000 R* since new. It doesn't matter if it's summer or winter I get between 35-38 mpg. I have the baron's 165 main 35. I have freedom duels & Mr C's air cleaner. I live at about 300' above sea level.
After reading these complaints I'm beginning to believe that there is no such thing as 40-45 mpg. I sometimes wonder how some people come up with their numbers. Are they filling the tank and setting the trip meter and then when they need fuel again dividing the trip miles by how many gallons it took to refill the tank?? I would be good money to have my bike tuned and get 45 mpg.
And Dave sorry again we missed you in Laughlin. Since my friend Tom's bike was acting up we didn't get there till right at 1:00. I went to the Yamaha booth and hung out for a little while but didn't see anybody I would know from the forum.
