Jetting slightly off? 7 Months, 3 Weeks ago
Hi guys,
I've done a bunch of stuff on my bike this season.
I think I'm on track, but just wanted to get your opinion.
Had:
165 Main Jet, 35 Pilot Jet, K&N filter on stock box, V&H pipes, speedstar ignition box.
NOW:
Did the fuel pump removal mod with the larger 2.5 float needle, 172.5 Main Jet, 4th clip, 35 Pilot Jet, PMS 3.5 turns, Baron's ported manifold, Barons BAK, re-routed the breather hose, Nemesis coils and wires, Iridium plugs, synthetic oil, synthetic gear oil.

Everything seems great so far.
Engine smoother, shifting smoother, ignition feels stronger, fuel pump removal mod successful, seems like there's no vapor lock in the tank.
- I sometimes get hesitation coming off idle. Not all the time, but often enough to adjust for. I guess I'll re-check the PMS turns and back out a bit more, or get a bigger Pilot Jet?
- I think I'm rich at WOT, and MPG seems to be down, so I'll go to the 170 Main?
- I think I'm hitting the rev limiter at 101 mph in 5th gear. I get a healthy pull up to 101 and once there, I guess the box forces the revs down to 80 mph. I don't have a tach, so I'm not sure if its going up to the 5500 rpm that its supposed to. Sounds about right?

Thanks for your help.

Hows your accel. pump? still in stock position? Try turning it all the way down and shutting it off. I put the nut on the bottom and did this as an experiment when I was having the same problem, worked great. Plus it stopped my carb coughing while bliping. Never noticed any "pulling difference" at take off either. If you go to a bigger pilot, your gonna see a big difference in m.p.g.'s

Follow Blackroadie's suggestion and 'play' with the acc. pump screw.

Good idea.

I don't think so. When I hit 5000 in second I'm going 55 mph.

Thanks Blackroadie.
I haven't touched the accel. pump, so I'll try shutting it off and see if it gets off idle smoother. But I though hesitation off idle meant that I needed more gas when I blipped it.

Thanks Doc,
I won't have time to check or make changes till the weekend, but since I had the dealership put in the speedstar ign box, I haven't looked at it. Never bothered to since there are no switches on it like the Dyna.
I don't understand why I can't go above 101 mph, when the pull should still be there. Is there a speed limiter in there too? Has the dealership not put in the speedstar ign box? Anyone have top speed info on stock, speedstar, or dyna ign boxes?

Thanks everyone.

Could it be you are running out of gas at 101 because of no fuel pump? When I run through the gears hard with less than 1/2 a tank of gas I start to stall at 75 or 80, this is after I removed the fuel pump. I did the gas cap fix and the 2.5 mm valve seat. I also start to stumble around 85 to 90 with less than 1/2 a tank of gas. I am going back to the fuel pump.

Thanks newroadie, but its not fuel starvation related.
Surprisingly, its not pump removal related at all. (no problems there!!)

Doc, what's your top at what RPM?

Every time I was accelerating up to 101 mph, the moment it hits it, "something" (the ign box rev limiter?) quickly but smoothly forced the bike back to 80 mph. It can't be fuel starvation or a carb issue, cause the ride back down to 80 mph seems deliberate and automatic. I've never hit ANY rev limiter before (cause the fuel pump actually starved before even getting to a high RPM) so I don't know what's supposed to happen. But the consistancy and smoothness of this happening seems like HAL is telling me to back off.
I just want to know if this sounds right, or if I need to bite it and get the Dyna ign box.

Never taken mine over 90 so I can't help you regarding my top speed but I've see folks hit 125 mph.

It's doesn't have a speed limiter but it does have a rev limiter. When you hit the limiter the engine starts to miss and sputter. You would not hit the rev limiter in 5th at 100 mph.

If you want to know what it's like, put it in 2nd and wind it out to 60 mph ... it should give you and idea of what it feels like.

The larger float valve should eliminate the missing so I'm not quite sure what your seeing.

Thanks Doc.
I'm not sure either.

The stock rev limiter is only up to 4200 RPMs?
Maybe that's what's in there. Never looked.

It doesn't sputter or anything. It just calmly but quickly slows the bike down.
I'll hitting the rev limiter in a lower gear (50 mph in 2nd) like you said and see what's up.

If anyone else has rev limit and speed info/data, that would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Nobi

Thats what you would think...but I've learned to think.."out of the box".. with this bike. Took me awhile to figure some of these things out...when it sounded like it was starving, it was actually getting to much gas. Another problem I had when I was rejetting last year was, once I got up to speed and held the throttle steady...it was sputtering a little. So, I raised the needle clip 1 notch..WRONG. Then I dropped it 1 below the original point and it was perfect. You never know.

Thanks Blackroadie,
I'll start with zero and then slowly go from there.

It seems like my rev limiter / ign box, will be the bigger mystery for now.
