My MPG plot thickens...Advise 7 Months, 3 Weeks ago
I called the shop this morning to get prices on stock mik jets and needle. I want (I think) to take my carb back to stock. The shop mechanic and parts guy do not think my jets will make that big of a difference. I'm not that mechanically inclined. I do change my own oil and make mods here and there, but the odds are high that if I took my carb apart then I would have to tow it to a shop.

I had my carb rejeted last Thursday and got 29 mpg. I got 29 mpg before I spent the $200 for the rejet. I don't want to continue to spend money with the same results.

I have V&H long shots and that's it. No after marker air box, no nitros, no hypercharger, just pipes. I did get a little smoother ride, but no increase in fuel economy.

Because of the expense involved I want to ask again about rejetting again. You guys feel that me going to a 182.5/35 single position needle will give me the better mpg's?

The shop installed a 175, 37; I;mnot sure what they did with the needle. I asked them to tell me but they forgot to call!

Help.

Yes...back to stock. That 37 pilot is gonna kill ya, let alone the 175 main. No need to rejet with just pipes.

I played around and put a 37 pilot in mine once, just to see the difference. I lost 5 m.p.g. instantly.

Chad I'm sure you can change the jets all on your own. Turn off the pet cock and pull the 4 screws on the bottom of the carb holding the bowl on.
A flat head screw driver will unscrew the pilot jet. If you need a stock pilot jet I will mail you one just give me your address and I will put one in an envelope for you. Look at this link to see which one is your pilot. It is the smallest of the jets.

Yep, do it once and you'll be able to do it blindfolded. Bet thats how some of the stealerships do it.

I'm stock with the exception of the V & H longshots and Mr. C's air filter. I did a 250 mile trip this weekend with a group of riders and got a whopping 55 mpg. Conditions were right and the speed was steady at around 55-60. Around town I'm in the upper 30's range. I did switch to Hi-test gas which eliminated engine knock and smoothed out the ride. I've got new plugs to put in but hate to do it with the RS running so good.

Crwood
I would just mess my pants if I got 55 mpg. I wouldn't know how to act.

I've been toying with the same ideas. I'm in the process of reinstalling my stock intake and going stock with the needle and jets, just waiting on my order to come in........BTW, I'll try it by stock again and if i'm satisfied i'll have a Baron's BAK for sale reasonalbly priced.

2000 R* I've had it over a year and it now has over 25 thousand miles. It has a Barons BAK and I've done the stage one to the exhaust. Other than that, I believe all the rest is stock. I'm getting 39 mpg, and usually drive 40 miles each way to work, mostly on freeways at 65-70 mph. Is this acceptable mpg? Seems like I should be in the 45+ mpg range?? Or am I just wishing. I've heard these guys getting 50+ mpg, but heck I'd be happy with 45+. I've not gotten into the carb to see what jets are in there. What is the best approach, should I take a look at the plugs first and see how they are burning, lean/rich, etc. Then get into the carb and find out what jets I've got? What's the best approach to try and improve mpg. I hope to have some RH Dualies in a few months, will that require any jet changes? Hardone2get, would you change ONLY the pilot and not the main jet? What does the pilot jet do?

the 175 is going in the right direction, get the airbox done.
not knowing what needle (if adjustable or the stock log) you will not see much out of the main jet anyway..
the 37 pilot is to big and where most of the fuel is used anyway...
If you tried to turn the pms screw in it would probably not stumble as it lets so much fuel past.
Do you need the choke/enrichner to start the bike or will it start pretty good with the choke off.
Usually a sign that too rich on the low end (PMS-Pilot Jet)..

Some of the carb guru's should pop in soon.

I am just going by what I learned here and all of my carb playing has me running good and decent power, If I would not twist that throttle so much I get high 40's mpg and low 40's when driving too fast. well over posted speed highway. In the 38-42 mpg when it is real cold here, in MI still fighting the 40 degree mornings and run the choke longer til I hit the highway a few miles from home..
