@#$@#$& SVS?!?! 7 Months, 3 Weeks ago
Not sure if that's what's going on, but I do know that without warning and out of the blue the damn bike started running like crap!! And just when I was consistantly getting 43-45 mpg...... And just like last year, it waits 'til a week or so before I'm supposed to go out of town to up!!
Last changes were made about two weeks ago and the bike has been running great. Rode it to work over the weekend, no problems. Didn't ride it again 'til this morning and about a half mile or so from the house it started popping and bucking like it was running out of gas, which it wasn't. And when I tried to give it more gas it bucked even harder, made all kinds of strange sucking noises from the carb and from what sounded like under the tank and backfired so loud it sounded like a rifle shot... Rode it the rest of the way to work (which is only 3-4 miles, in town), but got on it pretty hard a couple of times and it definitely didn't get any better. And as loud as it was backfiring I'm sure I woke a few people.... So is this SVS?????
bike!!!!!

In The Wind,
Aaron

Did you take the tank off at the last mods and maybe pinch a vent tube, creating a vacuum in the tank?

I'm no expert but those 3-4 mile trips to work can't be good for it, she's not even warmed up in that short of a distance.

I dont know....when I had SVS, the bike would act like that but would come out of it a couple miles down the road....until it cooled off again and started all over. I'm wondering if it's not something else. That's good I guess. I hate to see people have to start dealin' with SVS.

Also,... mine didnt backfire like you described. Almost sounds like no fuel supply all of a sudden.. i.e. Fuel pump takin' a crap, something plugging the line, etc.

What changes did you make? Might just now be catching up to you. Or something might have come loose. Always start looking at the last thing you did.

Put a bill or piece of tissue up to the pipe from the rear jug....if its full blown SVS it will suck that in and spit it back out ..good luck with the trouble shooting ...better before the trip than during.....it can be pretty unnerving at times....Coug

Well.....almost made it home. Piece of Yamaha!!! Waited til about a mile from the house and completely crapped out. Started popping and backfiring so bad I thought I was in a firefight, then died when I let off the gas and just coasted into a Lowes parking lot. Tried to restart it but no good. Walked home, got the truck and the tools and went back to see if I couldn't figure something out.

Just for GP I checked the battery voltage; 12.69 volts which is good according to the manual. Tried to start it; at first I didn't think it was going to, then it finally did. Only ran for about 15 seconds, died and exhaled a puff of white smoke out the carb!!! What the ?!?! What's that mean????? Finally got it restarted and it will idle fine. Exhaust sounds a little gurgly though. Kinda like blowing bubbles under water.... Managed to keep it running long enough to ride it home, and thats as far as I've made it.

As for some of the replies;

Bad gas??? Could be.....

Last mods were done over two weeks ago. If it were a pinched vacuum or vent tube you'd think it'd show up right away. Haven't had the tank off since.

Commuting; Always try to take the long way home (about 12 miles) and sometimes go that way to work. So very seldom do I ride straight to and from work.

Last changes only consisted of checking my needle setting and adjusting the PMS. Turned it in about 3/4 of a turn. And again; that was done over two weeks ago.

Did the "paper thing" at the tailpipes after I got it running in the Lowes parking lot. Probably not SVS because it didn't try to suck it in either pipe and if I held the paper tight in both hands, the exhaust is forceful enough it actually tore the paper. (An old receit...)

So...... What do the experts think????? Inquiring minds want to know....

Thanks for any and all input!! I can't say for sure, but I think the puff of white smoke out of the carb may be key in figuring this out.

In The Wind,
Aaron

Oh yeah; no fuel pump so that can't be the problem. Pulled the fuel line and I'm definitely getting gas....

It almost sounds like when I have to switch to the reserve, just before the main tank peters out, I get some missing and backfireing, if I don't switch to reserve, it will die. that being said, if your fuel pump or filter were crapping out, it would cause the same symtoms.. Did you relocate your pump or take it off?
