Mileage 5 Years, 10 Months ago
I just put my bike through 3 tanks of gas over the last 2 weeks or so and I am averaging 38 mpg. My current settings are as follows:

2006 R*
HK 2-1 Sideburners
K&N BAK
AIS removed
Barons Jet Kit: Mikuni 172.5 main, 4th clip, PMS - 3 turns, stock pilot

Any suggestions on where I might adjust to squeek out some more mileage?

Thanks

What kind of mileage did you get before the mods? My stock 02 R* with 60K miles gets 47 mpg of mostly high way riding. I was only getting in the high 30's on 87 octane. Changed to 89 octane to get to the 47.

down on the main jet... most guys are running 170, i've got a 167.5... also in on the PMS will help your gas milage... keep in mind by leaning out the mix, you will improve your gas milage, but you may have a slight decrease in your performance... I've got:
05 midnight silverado (windshield & hard packs)
speedstar high flow intake w/ K&N
self ported intake manifold
stage 1 modified stock exhaust
I'm running a 167.5 needle on the 4th slot baron's needle
my pms is 1 3/4 out
I get between 47 and 53 mpg depending on how I run
I've got enough power to spank all my buddies on their bikes:
1600 kawisaki w/ pipes and intake
harley roadking standard w/ pipes and intake

I would agree with Guido.

Put in the 170 Mikuni and do the WOT test. If it's OK then try the 167.5 and the WOT test again. If the 167.5 is OK then you could try a 165 but I doubt that it would work.

Once you have the main nailed down, then adjust the PMS. Use a tach to find the point at which it revs the highest. Lacking a tach ..... PMS out until it stumbles, in until it stumbles, halfway between is the starting point and then tweak it by 1/4 turns until you find the sweat spot.

Needle should be OK at 4.

Well after some fiddling with different settings, I have come up with 167.5, PMS 2.5, needle on the 4th clip. I tried the WOT test & 1/8 throttle she starts to slow down.

Some decrease in top end performance, but nothing too severe. At most I am getting approx 43-44 miles to the gallon.

I've thoughts of looking at the plugs, but these days with all the additives in fuel, I have read it is much harder to read plugs. What would be another measure to look at with regards to running too lean. I will mention I am at approx 600 ft above sea level.

Backfiring through the carb. Very hot engine. Needs choke for long time.

I doubt that this setup is too lean. If you want to increase the top end then go to the 170.

Or you could try putting another washer on the needle which should bring you to 4 1/2.

Allright, now I have a question(big shock).I tried to find a mainjet dj180 to jet my carb with. Called Dynojet, guy tells me he can get me that jet, 3 buck, 8 bucks to ship it (8 bucks?). Then he said to check with my dealer. So I did. They said it would cost them the same as me.So my question is , what is the mukuni jet size that is the eqivilent(?)to dynojets dj180? My dealer can get mukuni jets all day long.Any takers?

Thanks Musky, so it looks like a mukuni 170 is in the neighborhood of a dj180? And does this work with the DJ needle?

Post edited by: Big Bear, at: 2006/09/02 13:21

Might not hurt to get the 167.5 while you're at it. In case the 170 doesn't work out for you. Save you a trip back to the dealer. From what I've read (so don't take as gospel) the DJ is a tad shorter than the Mikuni but the grooves are in the same place. Which I guess means that the needle would not stick as far down (or up ) into the carb. I guess you would make up the difference with less washers. Must be someone here with the setup that will hop in.
