Bought older bike and am getting only 18 MPG 3 Years, 12 Months ago
Hi all, I know this problem has been talked about so many times. But I have bought a 2000 Road Star. It has 54,000 miles and runs GREAT. Looks perfect and has Cobra short slash cut pipes on it, nothng else that I can see though. I dont know if it wasw rejeted or not, is there a way that I can see? I dont dog it or run it hard at all and stay the speed limit only. But its only getting 18 mines a gallon at best. Because of this I only drive short distance....hell, my Crossfire gets 26 a gallon and has AC..HA...makes it not worh riding ...ALMOST.

Hot real happy just now!!!!

First thing to do is take off the carb and see what jetting you have.(Tech Articles has all the info on that) Post that info and we can help you from there.
Also check your plugs. Could be original.

Jeff, that's less than half of what you should get. I can't even believe the motor would run with that much gas going thru it..might want to check your math..

I did, I have checked it at least 4 times and just could not believe that it was right. I had my son run a tank threw it also and he came up with 19 and that was the best. Every bit of that was highway, none in the city or town at all. There was just 3 stop signs 4 red lights and a turn around and threw the same lights and stops. Its right...those were SMALL one light towns he went threw. 65 was max speed.

Fuel Leak? Maybe some really bad gaskets in the head? I'm stumped.

Nope, exhaust is dry and clean. Never ever smell any gas on start or running. I am going now to check the carb and jets.

Thanks guys

Have you been running the tank completely dry? If you've just been going by the fuel guage, that might be the problem. Just another thought.

Yes, we run it down to the reserve and get it home or refil it again. After we check the milage though.

check the air filter is clean. a dirty filter will kill economy.

combine that with the possibility of over-enthusiastic jetting done for the pipes, and youŽd get a gas guzzler.

any black smoke from the pipes?
