I'd use the #35 pilot first. Doc

#35 is the stock OEM pilot jet, correct? And in regards to the DJ 170, should I move the needle jet clip to 3rd from 4th, or let it be for the time?

Thanks mucho,

Oh yes, you have the 1700; I believe stock is 37.5

What is the jet that came with the DJ? You should not be greater than stock and it would not hurt to go down from stock to the 35. It sounds like it's running a bit rich at idle.

With the current setup ...

DJ170
Needle on 4
PMS 2.75
Pilot ??

yours should not be that rich.

Have you checked the float level. If it's too high it will affect the jetting. For the 1700 it should be even with the bowl mating surface.

I didn't look for a marking on the stock pilot when I took it out (duh) , and just put the one pilot that came with the DJ jet kit in (double duh) . I'll swap it out for the stock pilot and see if that helps. Right now I have the DJ 175 in, but I'll also drop down to the 170 and see what happens.

Thanks--

go back to the stock pilot ,if you used the one from the Kit you went
TO the 37.5.I`d try going back to the stock 35 pilot first.

I`m surprized your rich with the DJ170 Main

Post edited by: vegasdave, at: 2006/09/07 13:16

Thanks vegasdave. I was under the impression that the 1700 had the 37.5.

RK - Before rippping into the carb to put the stock (35) back in, check the float level. That way if it's high you don't need to rip into it twice.

Now that we're all confused. .... you should go one step at time to:

DJ170
Pilot #35
PMS 2.75
Needle on 4

If he's running the DJ170 main, doesn't that put him at around mukuni size 158-159? If so , isn't that a wee bit lean on the main jet . I know, I know ,just what you need is another opinion on jetting, but it's hard to imagine that the bike is running rich on the main with that jet in there. Dan

You are right on big guy. My opinion also but there are some guys here (vegasdave is one) who seem to be having success with the DJ170 .... and who can argue with success. I usually recommend a DJ180 as a starting point.

I also can't figure out why he seems to be still running rich when all logic points to a lean setup. That's why I suggested he check his float level. If it's on the high side it can screw up the settings.

Actually Doc I have the DJ175 main and have since had to set my
PMS at 3 1/4 to stop back fire on Decel.I`m kinda surprized these
guys aren`t lean also. go figure I also notice my performace
and mileage improved with the change. but slightly rich at idle

Re:Mystery jet...? 5 Years, 8 Months ago
Right now I haven't touched anything since my first jetting attempt. I have the DJ 37.5 pilot in there (thanks for clarifying that, Vegas), DJ 175 main, clip on 4 on the DJ needle, 2.75 turns out on the PMS. I am at 5500 feet elevation, and added the Speedstar Comp K&N airbox for the thinner air all the way up here. I notice it runs great midrange, but seems to be a little rich on the low end, which I think I read was controlled by the pilot jet. So, for the time being, I'll just check the float level & swap the pilot back to stock (35) and see if that stops the "choke me and it's instant death" syndrome the bike acquired after installing all DJ jets in the carb.

Now, if I could just get it so the cylinders all (EDIT: both, I meant...ALL cylinders...LMAO!) sound like they are firing the same...

OK, probably a dumb question, but I gotta ask...how do you work on the bike with it running (to check spark plugs) with the gas tank off, which you need to do to access the plugs, right? Only way I can figure is by attaching a long fuel line between the removed tank and the fuel petcock, no?

Well, regardless, at least she'll SOUND better when the Hard Krome 3" Big Straights get here on Monday! WOO HOO!

Thanks, guys...
