Still Bad MPG...what's next? 3 Years, 11 Months ago
|
|
I have a DJ 175 main, stock 35, and not sure about the needle.
I was really hoping I would increase my MPG after changing out the pilot jet, but after my first tank of gas I saw nearly no change.
I have performed the choke cable mod and that helped about 3 MPG's.
Help.

Not even close to being a re-jet guru but I'd guess a needle change may help. We have some been-there-done-that-repeatedly experts here. Just a matter of time till they chime in. Going to do mine in a couple of months for the first time so... Good luck.

bushrjackson Just to save some time when the real gurues show up what kind of mods do you have on the bike. ie exhaust, intake, manifold, year ect. I took the starter jet that has no hole in it and put a 45m in it. Don't know why it works but it does on my bike. Getting or 38-50 mpg depending on how hard I ride it. You may not want to try that on yours but I'm afraid to take it out. Good luck.

I believe the needle os on the 4th clip. How big of a difference will it make to go to the 3rd clip?

Just depends on if you need to go leaner or richer. If you go to the third notch from the tip end you will be going richer. That should give you more power and depending on where your at is whether it will help your milage. I had to go richer I was way to lean but you could be to rich all ready. What do the inside of the pipes look like.

What kind of gas mileage you getting? Many things make up good/bad MPG's. Elevation (higher=less mpg) , the heavy right hand (that guy's always to blame , round here), tire pressure , State of tune (air filter, plugs, etc..), load you carry , etc. If you're getting 25 MPG , that's bad , if you're getting 38 , you might be right in line with what's expected. Over the last week and a half there have been a number of forum threads that have gone pretty deep on the jetting issues. Click on the Forum tab at the top and the insert "50+ MPG"...no quote signs and you will see a ton of threads talking about jetting. The noted 50+ mpg yesterday, is a very recent one. I'm rejetting my R due poor mileage (21-33mpg)and as using a 170 main and a 35 pilot, needle is on the 3 clip and I' going to the 2nd clip from the top to try and lean it out a bit more...I did also find a crack in the rubber on the intake manifold...probably caused the bad milage...my plugs show lean but I was running on the 5th clip down (richer). I have BAK and short shot exhaust. I'll be posting my results on the "50+MPG yesterday" thread.
Stock for a 1600 is a 165 main, 35 pilot and 3rd clip down.

chad,
also remember to convert the jets, knowing which it is, a Mikuni jet or Dyno Jet.
stock jet on the 1700 182.5 mik, I now have a 180 dj in mine, which is much leaner, close to a 170 mik
in the tech articles there is a conversion chart so you can compare.
PMS turns out can consume a lot of fuel (35 2.5-3 turns) good start, and the enrichner(choke)will let a lot of gas by if it got stretched, I see you trimmed it and it saved 3mpg. check float level to bee sure it is not too high.
the 1700 also has a smaller front pulley which will lower mpg on the highway a tad.

I got a differance of about 6 miles per gallon going from the 4th to the 3rd slot. When talking about which slot you are counting from the blunt end to avoid confusion.
I went from low 30`s to high 30`s in that change alone.38 mpg`s at
70 mph I can live with.I`m sorry,but I don`t believe anybody doing over
seventy is gonna get high 40`s or low 50`s.
Maybe doing 55 to 65 mph.My 2 cents
