Check for stretched Choke cable!!! 7 Months ago
I just read the article on fixing a stretched Choke cable by Musky. WOW! That explains soooo much!

I've been trying to get my '05 R dialed in for about two months now. I went down to a Dyno 165 main on the WOT test and I was still running rich, getting fouled plugs and black smoke.

A little background: '05 Star with AIS removed, stage three pipes, poorman BAK with K&N, stock pilot and carb with Dyno jet 165 main right now. No air leaks or cracks on manifold.

I haven't had time yet to check my choke cable, but it all makes sense now. If the choke won't open all the way, you can't balance the rest of the intake system . I can't wait to get home to check it out!

Good information Musky! Thanks a lot. I wanted to put this thread in here because this is the only area I've been looking for info on adjusting my carb and intake system and I've never seen anything about inspecting your choke cable as a possible reason why things wont come together.

Great site guys, keep it up and thanks again.

ratl.

My "enricher" cable wasn't stretched, but I tried the fix anyway. Now there's a small gap between the knob and the bracket. I used an Xacto knife and was done in less than a minute.

By the way, I forgot to mention my elevation. We're at 5200 feet in the valley here in Albuquerque, surrounded by mountains. I mostly ride in the city, but almost all my trips involve going to mountainous country around about that is typically from 6000 to 9000 feet. Soooo, any suggestions regarding jetting at higher elevations from the community would be appreciated.

I haven't seen a lot of talk about jetting at these altitudes, so any experiences and information would be nice.

Thanks

The choke cable was in need of adjustment and I got that done and went ahead and changed the main to a dj170 with the needle on the 4th clip down and one washer.

Went for a quick ride. Started up ok, then died. Started and then began backfiring, popping and stuttering. Lost power and died. Difficult to restart. Filled up with fresh gas and I barely got back home.

I guess that's what happens when all your adjustments have been made with the choke partially pulled on.

I guess I'll start over trying to dial her back in tomorrow by putting the needle on the 5th clip and doing WOT testing.

Rule of thumb is for each 5000' go down one jet size.

Ratl--

I feel your pain...I'm in Santa Fe (6500 ft), and it took me forever to get my high-altitude jetting "right" (if there is such a thing )

On my '04, current settings are:
DJ 175 Main
Stock 35 pilot
DJ needle, clip on 4th from blunt end
PMS @ 3 turns out
Ported manifold
Speedstar ignition
SAK (Speedstar Air Kit)
Removed fuel pump
vented gas cap

And I, too, praised Musky for the choke cable chop--I did it and instantly gained 3 MPG. I commute daily from Santa Fe to Albequirky...96 miles round trip with 90% of that at 80 MPH+, Yami windshield and hard bags, and I'm getting 37 MPG. I guess I really can't complain...

Hey neighbor! Thanks for the info. I'm going home in a few minutes to start WOT tests on the 5th clip setting. As long as I'm down there, I might just duplicate your settings as a starting point.

I've had such bad smoke and fouled plugs that I'm planning to run some seafoam through a tank on Sunday if it's running good enough.

Thanks for the help.

Well, I duplicated Roadkill's carb setup except for the needle on 5th clip for WOT test. Ran crappy at 3 turns out on PMS . Turned it in to 2.75 turns and it ran great . Did the WOT test and it came out great . Now, I'm right on the cusp, not too lean, not too rich.

I still need to change the needle to the 4th clip and dial in the PMS a little more, but, WOW , what a difference already. I can feel more accelleration and power. I'm looking forward to finding out my mileage now with the changes.

I'll let you all know how it all finishes up after I ride out a tank with some seafoam in it. Gotta clean up those deposits from running rich.

Little tip: I picked up a air powered spark plug cleaner from Harbor Freight Tools for $9.99. Works great and made check my plugs a lot cheaper than buying more all the time.
