What is the choke knob mod? Isn't everyone's starter jet plugged?

Tom it is my understanding that the 99 starter jets weren't plugged. I have a 99 carb and it isn't plugged. The choke mod is you pull the choke knob out and trim the back side of the knob with a razorblade until when you push the choke in there is a little space between the knob back and the nut on the bracket. It makes sure the choke is all the way off that way.

Thanks Curt....you know what I'll be doing tonight.
I have a 2000 R and mine is plugged. I guess I'll have to do some research ...does that hurt my MPG?

Ok I made two cuts off the back of the choke knob of about 1/16" each...first cut it still wasn't going all the way in. On the second cut the knob goes all the way in. I'll test tomorrow. Who who ever thought of that one?!?!?!?! Nice article Musky! Thanks

Making progress: I had the Dynojet kit in my 1600. It says to run a 190-195 main if you run pipes with open baffles and a BAK. I run both and my jetting is a 170 main, 35 pilot, needle set on the 5th notch (previous owner settings). Pistons have pretty good carbon buildup, black sooty pipes, etc.
I just kicked it up to the 3rd notch on the needle and relized I might have a leak in the intake manifold/joint....I sealed that and started kicking the needle clip up...now on the #3 notch and still way rich, but getting better. at least the electrode is now showing a little tan.... I'm moving up one more notch to #2 notch and also did the choke knob chop so we'll see how it runs now.

Making more progress:
Last change...moved the clip to #2 notch from top, from #3 notch. Rode the bike prior to turning off engine ran it up to about 2500-3000 in gear coming down my street, when I knew I could coast the rest of the way to my driveway I pulled the clutch and killed the motor. Pulled the plug out and I'm now getting a little more of a tan insulator on just the top part of the insulator tip...everything around it is still black and sooty.
I'm running the 170 main and am running out of clip notches in the needle. I'm inclined to put in a 165 main and move the clip down to #3 or #4 from the top and see when it puts me.
