Re:Jetting slightly off? 7 Months, 3 Weeks ago
As I said before, I won't be touching my bike till the weekend, so I've been thinking about it.
Concurred by Doc, I thought I'd try 170 main since the current 172.5 is rich, but I'm itching to try the 167.5 first. Here's why.
Before rejetting to the current 172.5 main, I was running a K&N filter on that stock airbox that was missing a square plug. Musky, Flashback, and Big Bear helped me out, but the conclusion was that I was riding with free flowing unfiltered air into the carb. But the bike was running fine except for the pump not keeping up and starving the carb.
Other than the fuel pump removal, I've added Big Bear's old ported manifold and changed to a Barons BAK, which should actually be more restrictive than a free flowing busted air box. Would these changes require a 165 to 170 change, or a 167.5 change? I guess the actual quesiton is, how big a difference does a ported manifold make? I know I should just try both at WOT, but testing out the theory with you guys first.

No way you're hitting the rev limiter in 5th, and if you are using the Dyna3k, you shouldn't be at 5500 on the rpm, max would be 5k to set it for. I hit the limiter in 3rd at 99mph, not even sure if I can hit it 4th, and I know I'll never hit it in 5th. 5th at 70mph, I'm only turning about 2k rpm.

Thanks for the rev limit input.
What ign box do you have? The Dyna 3000?

BTW, anyone with opinions on trying out the 167.5 jet instead of the 170 jet first?

I'm running a 167.5. But I think you answered your own question. WOT and try em both.

From what I have read, a ported manifold results in a richer mixture.

Questions...
Is there any possibility that the new ign box wasn't installed and the stock one is still on the bike?

Where/what is this square plug that was missing from the stock air box? The only thing that comes to mind is the square hole at the rear lower of the airbox. But that is where all of your intake air is supposed to come in. And the way the filter element fits to the backplate it's almost impossible to get unfiltered air.

Interesting, I didn't know that!
By that logic, I wonder if the stock 165 Main would work...

Since I haven't looked at it, I need to look at that.

I went thru this on a different thread, but I had the triangle K&N filter Speedstar upgrade with the stock airbox. The upgrade comes with a plug for the square hole, cause the filter is now between the cover and the edge of the airbox like the Barons BAK. The stock air fliter does take air thru the square hole, but the filter is mounted directly on the round hole connected to the carb inside the airbox.

Re:Jetting slightly off? 7 Months ago
Hi guys,
Its been a while. Sorry.
Been a crazy 2 weeks at work.

If you're still interested, I changed the main jet to 167.5 from 172.5.
So far its OK, but traffic sucked so haven't been able to WOT effectively to see if this is working.
I screwed in the accel pump adjustment all the way in up to the lock nut. Still getting hesitation off of idle on occasion so next I'll try putting the lock nut on the other side to turn the squirt off completely.
I figured out the 101 mph limit mystery. Finally got around to looking at the ign box and guess what the dealership put in. It seems like a stock ign box for 1600s!! They didn't even bother to put in a stock 1700 box!! I had a Speedstar box that got fried, had work done under warranty, and this is what I found. I might as well get a Dyna 3000 box now after I talk with the dealership.
So a 1700 on a 1600 ign box at 4200 rpms gets you 101 mph in 5th gear.

... you have to watch them like hawks.

The WOT does not mean 'go as fast as you can'. Put it in second and wind it out.
