Good Jetting Questions&Discussion 7 Years, 7 Months ago
I would like to vent alittle frustration on the way my ride has been jetted. I have tried about all that has been suggested in finding the carb cough cure even re-drilling the pilot air jet under the diaphram to a larger size and re-drilling the other one in the mouth of the carb. I have to get things better than they are. Who wants to come to a light with a V-Twin competeter and have your bike cough?

I should take a prozack about now and call it quits.

I have reciently bumped up the starter jet to a 77.5 instead of stock. I finally noticed the difference dialing in the PMS 3.75 turns with less carb cough and decel pop and the pilot air plugged (Muckers). Haven't tried the #40 with this set up yet but that would be way too rich for my set up (I think) Yami BAK, Nemisis manifold, RH 2into1.

I believe I'm too rich on the main 170 because dialing in the other 2 circuts has been a real pain in the arse. I'm starting to believe the possibilities instead of being "lean" and making the carb cough its too rich and ignites after detination with the Nemisis manifold. I'm talking throttle blipping. Ran well with straight pipes now with Roadhouse 2 into 1 pipes I'm having this problem.

I need to be straightened out and start all over again with this carb, don't get me wrong its running good and pritty sure I'm rich in the main and lean in the Idle circut and cannot dial the idle circut proper with a rich main.

I'm open for discussion. I hope my writting is understandable

Why do you think you are rich in the main and lean in the idle? Plug checks? Other means?

Look at the tech articles here on accellerator pump adjustments. Less squirt from the pump may help you as well.

You may want to try to bump your idle a little as well.

Post edited by: CRASH, at: 2004/10/12 12:06

Plugs are not a good indication for me as I've been playing all summer with adjustments, kinda black at the exhaust tips is all I can say. Right now I do not need the choke.

Have done the accerator pump adjustments to placing the nut on the other side but I do not like or feel this is proper and have some squirt as apposed to none. Also the lean action is coming before the acc. pump enguages. I have adjusted the timing even trying to bend the tang a bit to deliver fuel earlier. All what I have written here is not the problem it is before this system or circut kicks in.

I believe my problem lies in the pilot "AIR" circut. One of the air pilots is giving me too much air before the butterfly or flapper opens causing the cough on throttle blip.

I have tried drilling the air jet under the diaphram oversized (they do not sell that large size, only 3 sizes smaller than stock) and I'm wondering if someone can confirm that a smaller size would richen the idle circut.

I should have room for adjustment and not such a small margine for a fix.

thanks for the response Crash

Draco,

You say you don't need the choke to start it. That is way to rich. I would say the 170 with the Nemesis is pretty close. It sounds like the idle and pilot circuits are the culprits.

What needle are you using?
Is it the stock needle?
What clip is it set on?
What is the pilot jet size?

This might help someone to recommend a fix if they 'see' what is inside the carb.

Good Luck,
David

With the V&H Propipe and the Nemesis manifold my ideal setup was 170 main, #40 pilot, 4.5 on the clip and PMS about 2.5.

I needed the choke to start it when the engine was cold. Very little carbon buildup inside the pipes and the plugs were a perfect salmon colour.

Hope this helps.

77.5 starter jet
170 main
4th clip spacer & washer (don't know the type no markings)
#35 pilot 3.75 turns

I have a #40 pilot to try with the starter jet I installed but now I really feel I'm getting rich.

Thanks Doc, I've tried that set-up with the stock starter jet (55.7)? and a #40 I had about 1 turn on the PMS couldn't set it up right so I took it out and put the #35 back in.

Not sure what the starter jet is doing but it changed my PMS scencitivity in other words I was able to dial it in easier than before. 3.75 I feel I could go to 4 turns. I'll try the #40 with it but may be too rich.

I had straight pipes with no problems now with a RH 2into1 the bike may run more like stock. There is enough air intake with the K&N and the exhaust maybe restricting. My exhaust tip is black and comes off a little with my finger.

I regret to inform all that I have found a manifold leak. I have been too stubborn to check with a more powerful liquid like "either" for fear of pealing paint. A leak has now been confirmed on my Nemisis manifold.
