GAS MILEAGE CONCERNS - Please Help Me!!! 5 Months, 1 Week ago
UPDATE ON MY continued concerns on the whole MPG issue!?!

BECAUSE, if what I am reading here on this forum is true and accurate, I am still in serious trouble with my 2007 Roadstar Silverado 1700.

My bike NOW HAS 1500 miles on it and I am still not getting any great MPG (like 23-26MPG).

again, It is all stock except for the Cobra exhaust and they said they re-jetted it at the Yamaha dealership where I purchased the bike and the Cobra exhaust.

If you have any insights, I am all ears.

Please help me if you can.

THANK YOU!

Firstly

Secondly, in regards to the jetting... you'll find that the consensus here (amongst actual R* riders) is that you don't need to rejet if you're only changing the exhaust. Until you change your air intake, leave the jetting stock.

Thirdly, you'll find that the experience of most people with the dealer is that the dealer jets far too rich. I would check out what they've rejetted it with and change what you need to back to stock.

I'm sure the gurus will chime in shortly, but I figure I'd give you what knowledge I've already gleaned from here

Are you dividing your mileage divided by your amount of gas you put in? If the only thing you changed was exhaust, I don't think that you should have even messed with the carb. Others will chime in with better advice.

Check your MPG after your 600 mile service. New motors are "tight" , and will use more fuel. I check mine like this : fill tank (ex. 4 gallons) , divide by mileage ridden (ex. 160 miles) = 40 mpg. Give or take. Climate , elevation , jack rabbit starts , blipping at red lights , amount of weight being hauled , etc , etc , etc , all effect the bottom line. Still , check it again after break in. BB

EDIT : after a re-read , I see you claim to be dealer jetted. That typically results in RICH bikes. Jetting is Not required for pipes....believe us. You will need to have your bike set back to stock settings to get better gas mileage. Sorry. BB

I am not really sure that they did even do any "re-jetting," but I was just thinking that roughly 23 mpg was far from what I had in mind for this bike to produce.

Any specific technical questions that I should ask the dealer as it relates to what they did specifically to the bike when they put on the new exhaust?

Honestly, I am not sure what they ACTUALLY did to the "jetting" aspect when they installed the pipes, but something is not right with approx. 23 mpg.

Got any insights as to what I may need to ask the dealer!?!?!?!

Like Big bear said...check after she's broke in....The dealers do like to get them rich, easier for them to take care of a carbon problem then to replace a burned up 'lean' motor. Just ask them what jets they switched out to. The stock carb would of had a 35 pilot and a 182.5 main. Also ask them if they switched the needle out. Did they put an adj. one in and where is it set at? Like these guys say, they shoulda left it alone until you switch the airbox too, but you cant tell these dealers anything.

Well, here's my nickle's worth...

For a new Roadie owner this may be too much, too soon but might as well jump in with both feet. LoL
If I were going to go into the carb in your situation then I wouldn't go back with the stock 182.5 main jet. They are way rich when stock and even if you changed the airbox I have never seen anyone with a main jet as rich as the stock one. No wonder some have SVS problems and I just can't tell you to go back stock knowing it's too rich.
If it was me... I would have the following setup. (And I still think you would be rich but better than too lean)
Stock 35 pilot
170 Mikuni main (Maybe even 167.5)
If it has the stock needle, nothing to change
If a multigrooved needle then 3rd groove.
If PMS is plugged, leave it alone. If not, start at 2 1/2 - 3 turns out.

Again, only my opinion. And we all know what they say about opinions.

Y'all feel free to tell me I'm wrong.

They shouldn't have jetted for just pipes in the first place. They most likely followed the pipe mfg recommendations which I'm sure made you too rich. Your mileage will get better after you have some miles on it. It's still too new to be sweating yet. If you go back to the stock jets and needle I'm betting you mpg will go up.

I'm thinking break-in won't double your gas mileage, though, so I also chime in to say it would be good to find out if the dealership rejetted, and if so, take it back to stock (or what BigBoyinMS recommends).

I'm still running stock, but this is a recurring theme here.

BTW, I get about 42 mpg hauling my 260 pound behind around. Lower if going interstate for any distance, higher if riding casually through the country. Maybe that can give you benchmark.
