Messing with the needle clip 6 Months, 2 Weeks ago
Well... I wanted to see what would happen when I moved the clip from the 4th notch to the 5th. I wasn't expecting a noticeable change, but man did I ever get one... IT SUCKS!! I'm noticing that the bike feels like it's running out of gas at cruising speed. It loses power and sputters... not what I was expecting when I richened it up. I'll have to go the other way (try the 3rd notch) to see what happens there I guess. Anyone know what I should expect?

Running a hypercharger w/stinger air scoop, pms 3 turn, main 170 mik. Stage 1 stockers. Thanks

Where you had it should be about right. You should detail whatt mods you have to get a better idea of what is required.

Stage one pipes might be part of the problem. Still pretty restrictive. Are you counting from the blunt end?

Are you sure the M 170 is not too big?

I have a 2000 Roadie with short shots and a Barons BAK & power cone and am running a 170 main and 35 pilot (stock) on the 2nd slot down from the blunt end and it still too rich...just now are my plugs starting to go to a dark black/brown color. As I continue to lean out the carb I am getting more power, much more crisp throttle response . I may go back to the 165 and go to the 4th or 5th clip slot down...I don't have a 167.5 main. Previous owner had it jetted and it was too rich.

My gut feeling is you will see an improvement when you go to the 3rd slot if you only richened it up by one move of the clip and saw it run that poorly. What color are your plugs?

Well, I think I may have figured out why I have crap for power in the mid and why it feels like it's running out of gas. As I was getting on the bike this morning, I looked over at the workbench and what did I see... the diaphragm spring from the carb. I forgot to put it back in!!!! So, tonight she's going to go back in.

As for the notches, yes I am counting from the blunt end. That much I learned from here already

For the 170 main, I haven't done a WOT yet so I can't be sure where it sits. All I know is that the only black I could see on my plugs was on the threading. On the electrodes there was either no colour or a light tan-to-white colour.

I agree the stage 1's are too restrictive, they're not my standard exhaust. I'm lending the bike to a good buddy in a week while I'm in Cancun for 2 weeks. He has a sensitive ear to my Samson Rolled Thunders, so I did him a favour and slipped these back on just the other day. I plan on pulling them when I get back from Mexico in favour of my Samsons.

The plan when I get home tonight is first to put the diaphragm spring back in. Then, still at the 5th notch I'll take her back on the road and do a proper WOT to see where my main sits. Once I know that, then I can better know what needs to be done and set the clip back at the 4th notch. I do have a 167.5 mik, so I can swap that in if the 170 is too rich.

I think that 8 out of 10 times I forgot the spring when I was first messing with my carb. But I would always remember it just as I tightened the last screw on the airbox.
