Hello and thanks in advance for your help....

Here's the question:

I just installed a set of samson rolled thunders on my '07 with stock air box and i am gettin an occaisional backfire or popping sound on decel usually on a hard decel, other than that it runs great - idles great and takes the throttle nicely (no stumbling). I have not touched the PMS nor do i even know where it is located on the carb, but i think that is what i should do after reading some posts here. Just wanted to make sure i am thinking correct before i do. Also i should be turning it out right?

Popping on decel is the AIS and/or the PMS. Remove the AIS. If it's popping around 1500 rpm on decel then turn the PMS out 1/4 turn until it disappears.

Backfire on decel is usually a leak in the pipes. Check for leaks and fix. Occasional backfire on hard acceleration/decel is not uncommon. Sometimes it can be reduced by leaning the carb out a bit.

Doc thanks and let me make sure i'm following ya....bear with me i'm slow

When u say leak in the pipes are u refering to the headers or the mufflers, or both?

AIS should be removed before i try the PMS?

Not Doc , but...... You should check the head pipe at the head , and where the muffler joins. Remove the AIS , see what she does , if it still needs an adjustment , then back out the PMS a 1/4 at a time. BB

You can just disable the AIS to do a test run too.

Although IMO you should go ahead and yank it just cuz it's butt ugly and you don't need it anyway.

connect the hose from the rear cylinder and attach it to the front one, then just plug the small hose as in the article

You can stick a golf tee, BB or a small bolt up the hose.

PMS is adjusted any time but if the popping is due to the AIS it obviously won't help turning it out.

well i was about to fiddle with the ais and pms the other day when i got to lookin at taking the air box off i noticed a tube running from the carb with a black dial type device in the end of it mounted just under and to the right of the air box. Is it possible that this is some type of pms adjustment device or does anyone know what it is? this bike only had 14 miles on it when i got it so i assume it is a stock item.
