needle & jet 4 Years, 6 Months ago
Hi Guys.
I just bought a 99 road star. it has a set of cobra slahcuts, with baffles . (Sounds like a 450 honda) and I guess the guy drilled holes in the rear of the air box, anyway..it doesnt seem to have the balls I expected, starts good..runs good,,but lacking when I want it to go..NOw that I put all the money into buying it, sounds like I need to Jet it . Do I just need a 170 main, and a new needle.. do I have to BUY the kit. or can I get just these 2 items,,,,,low budget now that I just ordered 2 tires this week......lolcan anyone help me out ...?

FWIW... Best performance will come from new pipes and a new airkit, followed closely by porting the manifold.

It sounds like you have the pipes (not slip ons right?), but still working with the stock air kit. At least it has been drilled, and that should help.

Here's what we need to know to help, all in one post (keeps us from having to search around):

Pipes (slip on or not, baffles or not)
Manifold (stock or ported)
Air kit

Sounds like you have most of this. Do you know if you have an aftermarket needle in there yet?

You most likely need to start small, and work your way up on the main. Don't want to be too rich, and we can identify mains that are too lean. Perhaps a 167.5, then a WOT test to confirm if too lean or not. This will require an aftermarket needle, and unfortunately I am not aware of anyone who will sell them without selling an entire jet kit.

Look into Baron's or a Dyna jet kit. They will run you anywhere from $50 to $60.
