Re:needle clip position picture 6 Months, 1 Week ago
Does anyone else besides myself have a needle that has 6 spaces to clip too?? Since I had my bike tore down while I was painting I moved my fuel pump, checked the plugs and checked the needle setting. My problem I'm seeing is where position 1 is would be position 2 on my needle. I'm not sure what needle I have since I got it with my barons kit about 6 or 7 years ago.

There was a spring on my stock needle? Yes it fell out when I was putting it back together, fortunately I found it on the floor

It doesn't matter. We start you off at say ... the 4th clip .... and then depending on how your bike runs, you move the needle up or down by moving the clip and/or shimming.

It's all relative...You could be on clip number 2 from the bottom but have a 165 main which would flow less that a 167.5 or 170... Or your PMS could be screwed in 1 full turn more than someone else. The key is what do your plugs look like....they should be tan...if they are tan and the bike runs well you could have a 160 main and be on the first clip and it wouldn't matter.
Example:
167.5 main on the 1st clip down from the blunt end (leanest clip position) would probably be similar to running a 165 main on the 5 clip down from the blunt end(richest clip position. Once you're in the ball park, the clip and PMS merely fine tunes given your altitude and minor differences in your bike....mods, better compression, better than stock exhaust, worse compression, an air filter element that flows better than another, etc.

Cartersta
Thanks for the comment on my new paint. I think I finally have my bike dialed in completely both in looks and running. I'm running a 165 main
35 pilot my clip is set at 3rd position from the bottom with the needle retainer and then a washer then clip. I have my PMS at 2 turns out and my plugs are perfect as far as I'm concerned. I had a number of things that I changed and now I want to ride for awhile to see how my mileage comes out. Perhaps the shinny new paint will increase my areo dynamics and help with my mileage.LMAO!

.

Not sure how you have the needle set up.

In the pic, the top of the needle (blunt end) is on the right hand side. From the right or top (always relate the clip to the top) you would have a washer, the clip at 4th groove (for example), the white spacer and then a coloured washer (usually silver).
