I am new to the forum and R*. I've had my eye on a 2" LED tachometer for my bike. I'm mechanically inclined, but have never installed a tach? I have 0 experience with mods other than bolt-ons ( I've had my R* 3 weeks). I'd ridden my VTX for 5 of the last 6 years. but got cracked last July 3, 2007.
Ofcourse the Doc's said retire from riding. 1 year later I'm back with a new 07 Midnight Silverado. I still have the VTX, it got a broken mirror and a few scratches I got a new shoulder and a rebuilt elbow! I'm still an X fan, but I'm starting to love my R* 1500 miles and counting.
My questions are: How difficult is the installation?
Should an external wiring block be installed, I also been considering engine LEDs.
Are there any post on the subject?
Is this the right Forum???

our Doc didn't say retire did he

Yes ... I told him to retire and give me his bike.



Nice tach. You can find some tach threads regarding installation .... just search on tach.

Ditto for the LEDs. We also have a member who sells LED sets.

Hi Dcsdeuce first of all I installed a tach / riser combo on my 01 and it was quick and simple. The wires went to the coil on the left side (Drivers Side)just under the tank. I had to move the tank back about 6 inches to get in there and hook up the wires, it was a breeze. If I remember right there's only 3 wires. it took longer to install the risers than hook up the tach ............ Go for it!

Tach install is easy just make sure you insulate the ends when you hook them up. Use shrink tube or some good piggy back terminals on the coil. Took me longer to make my mount then it did to wire it up.

Ditto on the tach,mine went on quite easy. Same tach as Curt has. Also put some dielectric grease on before you seal it up and you should not have any problems.
And congrats on getting back in the saddle.Enjoy your roadstar.

When you hook it up my understanding is hook it to the coil that fires the rear cylinder as the front one goes down when you hit the rev limiter thus loosing your tach momentarily...Coug
