I talked to my mechanic buddy who has been working on metric bikes for thirty years. He says Gold Wings are notorious for head shake. I have had three Harley Electra Glides and never experienced the problem. The mechanic buddy says the name for the problem is sympathetic harmonics. The bike(or tire) starts to drift off the path and the tire tries to correct the offline motion, then corrects again the other way starting the shimmy. Or at least I think that is what he told me, my memory isn't what it used to be.

Very true. Mine does it, and it's a 2006 with new tires. The main idea is to KEEP YOUR HANDS ON THE HANDLEBARS. Ajusting your chin straps while rolling is like talking on a cell phone in a car. You're not on a dirt bike anymore. It's a hog-and-a-half.

My mechanic told me the exact same thing the first time mine did it and I asked him......and it still does it today. So, I don't let go to the bars while rolling. All is well.

Enjoy,

Russ

I had never experienced this type problem until after I put a small bikini fairing on a Yamaha 750 I had years ago. First day it was on I had a tank slapper of monumental proportions at about 90mpg. Scariest thing ever, didn't think I would come out of it in one piece.
I would concentrate very hard on the front end especailly if you have a windshield. I have the yamaha windshield on my Roadie and have moved it around, trying different positions and it really makes a difference in airflow but have not had any issue with front end wobble. Good luck and be safe.

Thanks for all the replies, I went to the Yami dealer yesterday to see what they would charge to tighten the bearings and they said somewhere between $75.00 and $120.00 depending on how many hours, so that told me that if they did not know how long it was going to take that they have not done enough bearing tightening to work on my bike, so I ordered a bike manual for $45.00 and I will teach myself, can't be too hard to read a book. I will be in touch, Thanks again.

ummm!!! First you all helped me figure out what was wrong with the bike then you give me a book to show me how to fix it, let me guess next someone is going to show up with toolbox in hand
Thanks everyone, I look forward to the day when I have worked on my bike enough to help another brother out on how to fix his or her bike.

My mechanic buddy says the wrenches at Wing Dings (Gold Wing Meetings) stay busy tightening steering head bearings. He told me he worked on one that had been adjusted at a Wing Ding where the guy could hardly turn the handle bars. That was their solution to fixing a head shake. Was it Ob who said keeping your hands on the bars is the fix. I have to agree.

I also have a 01 with the shimmy while slowing down off the highway. I had 2 wings that did the same thing and just got used to it and always kept at least one hand on the handlebars. looks like I'll be adding a little more fixer uppers over the winter. I'll be checking for lose nuts over the winter!

OkieBo, Did you ever get the shimmy to stop? My '07 RS does it as well.

I've rode allot of miles on different bikes...a few that shouldna been on the road they were so unsafe.

IMHO any kind of wobble or shimmy on the front end is not normal and should be fixed. It may take a few trials and errors before you find the problem but IMHO there IS a problem. I know a few wings riders and they never had that problem except when they wobbled after too many pops.

Tire pressure is so important, alignment is so important, the tires are so important, weight distribution is so important, and the colour of your bike is most important. That's why I have a red one.
