Cartersta,
Are you saying you removed the plastic belt guides and did not replace them?

Yes you can do that ... unless do you're partial to dumping the clutch a lot .... then you bound to jump the pulley and strip the belt.

I just took my bottom belt guard off and took my bike for a ride, the whine is still there, when I accelerate the noise gets worse and when I cruise it is a little quieter but still there, I spoke to the Yamaha mechanic today and he said to take the pully cover off and clean a grease everything up, but I do not have a manual yet! Well back to the garage.

Did you check the belt tension?

You can download / print out the service manuals here for free - Service manuals

both dealerships tightened the belt, so they say, so I gues I need to check it again and check the alignment of the wheel, thx for the service manual link.

Re:Chirp and High Pitched Whine 5 Months ago
Well, it has been a couple of weeks now, and I have added washers to the rear tank bolt and replaced the plastic bottom belt guard with the chrome one, the plastic did show the belt rubbed a little, had the belt tension re-adjusted and had the mechanic check to make sure the wheel was aligned, took the belt pully cover off and re-greased the belt guides. Rode to Mt. Tremblant and back over 1600 kms, and guess what, the chirp re-appeared this weekend on a 200 km trip. It still sounds like the belt and pully, so I guess I re-grease the belt guides again, I am thinking that maybe my belt has dried out a bit, it is an 02, maybe I should just replace the belt with a new one, but everyone says, they never need replacing?? Dissapointed, but still happy I'm riding.
