MPG 5 Months, 2 Weeks ago
I'm sure this topic has been beaten to death. I've searched for it and found many threads on the subject. I've read that some people are getting about 50 mpg. This worries me because I just checked and i'm getting about 38 mpg 95% freeway @ 60 mph and very easy on the throttle.

Is this right? I've been reading about some screw on the carb that lowers fuel efficiency if it comes out but this is all new to me. My Road Star is a 2006 with almost 9k miles... any ideas?

I think 50 mpg is the exception more than the rule. Depending on your set up, (pipes, air kit, jetting, accessories like windsheld, luggage, and all the other options you can install) all have an effect on your mileage. I get about the same as you do. anywhere between 36-41. Is your bike stock? If you haven't been into the carb.,then you wouldn't have to worry about the PMS screw coming out.

Figured mine out a while back and with the PMS out 3 turns, Shogun pipes, no carb work and the stock filter I'm getting about 37 highway. Beats the heck out of my truck at 20 highway. Ain't used that in a while.

The last two tanks that I computed it, they came out 43 and 44 mpg. I was satisfied.

There's very little high gear highway runnin' in those miles either.

Mine is bone stock. With 6 or 7 fill ups so far I've been all over the map from 30 - 45. The lower readings were with premium gas, dunno if that was the difference but at any rate mine seems very erratic.

What mods do you have done to your bike? That makes a lot of differance. I get around 32-35 city which I drive everyday back and forth to work. Highway I do good to get 45 running 80+ mph and I am real heavy on the throttle and wind it out real good. Those that get 50 I think are pure stock and really don't hop on it very much. I got 50 once when mine was stock with no mods and running 60, those days a LONG gone.

alot of it is going to depend on riding conditions. Hills? Head wind? How fast you ride? highway miles? city miles? It is endless.. There is a ton of things to consider.

Up to 10,000 miles the best I ever got was 38mpg.
Now it's around 45mpg.

You know the Roadies want 87 octane fuel, right? Low compression jugs on these things don't do well on "premium" grade stuff.
